Who LINAK is

LINAK A/S is a Danish manufacturer of electric linear actuators and actuator systems. It is family-owned and headquartered in Guderup, near Nordborg, in southern Denmark. Most people meet a LINAK product without knowing it, in a hospital bed, a height-adjustable desk or a recliner. Machine builders know the company for its TECHLINE range: sealed DC actuators for tractors, harvesters, wheel loaders, packaging machines and mobile robots.

LINAK says it employs about 2,500 people worldwide and operates in more than 30 countries. It has production in Denmark (Guderup and Sønderborg), China (Shenzhen), the USA (Louisville, Kentucky), Thailand (Chonburi province) and Slovakia (Prešov).

History and ownership

The company’s roots go back to 1907, when Christian Jensen opened a machine shop in Nordborg. LINAK’s own history gives the turning point as 1976, when his grandson Bent Jensen took over as chief executive. According to the company, Bent Jensen built an electric linear actuator for a friend’s wheelchair, and in 1979 LINAK developed its first production actuator, the LA30. The business was renamed LINAK in 1984, a contraction of the Danish lineær aktuator.

International growth followed. LINAK Scandinavia AB opened in Stockholm in 1985 as the first office outside Denmark. In 1990 LINAK introduced its first complete actuator system for hospitals and care, and in 1998 the DL1, its first system for electrically height-adjustable desks. A factory in Kentucky opened in 1999, the first LINAK plant outside Denmark. More recent milestones include a commitment to the Paris Agreement in 2023 and the launch of the LA42 actuator in 2024.

LINAK describes itself as family-owned and does not publish a parent group. Bent Jensen was named EY Entrepreneur of the Year in 2019.

Product portfolio

LINAK organises its business into four areas: industry, farming and marine; healthcare; desks; and comfort furniture. For OEM machine design, the relevant range is TECHLINE, which covers sealed DC actuators with optional built-in control electronics.

Industrial rod actuators

The LA36 is the workhorse of the range. It reaches 6,800 N and up to 160 mm/s, with strokes from 100 to 1,200 mm, and is sealed to IP66 dynamic and IP69K static. Its datasheet sets the duty cycle at 20% at full load up to 600 mm stroke, falling to 10% on the longest strokes. That is typical of DC actuators with Acme-type spindles, and it is the first figure to check when replacing a pneumatic cylinder that cycles continuously.

For more force at low speed, the LA37 is rated to 15,000 N at up to 10 mm/s. The LA33 covers the middle ground at 5,000 N and 70 mm/s. Where space is tight, the aluminium-housed LA25 (2,500 N, strokes from 20 mm) and the LA14 (750 N, up to 45 mm/s, rated from -40 to +85 °C) fit into confined mechanisms.

The LA76 uses a brushless DC motor and is aimed at long service life. LINAK states it is tested to at least 200,000 cycles at maximum load and duty cycle, with 6,800 N and up to 142 mm/s.

Integrated control and interfaces

Many TECHLINE actuators can be ordered with LINAK’s IC Integrated Controller. That moves the motor driver, limit handling and position feedback into the actuator. Published interface options include the LINAK I/O interface, CANopen, CAN SAE J1939, IO-Link, LIN bus and Modbus RTU, plus EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP and PROFINET. Several options are compliant with Danfoss PLUS+1 for mobile machinery. Selected models also offer ATEX/IECEx approval for dust-explosive areas.

Technologies and standards

The TECHLINE range uses permanent-magnet DC motors driving spindles through a gear train, so the actuators run directly from 12, 24, 36 or 48 V vehicle or panel supplies. Ingress protection is a major theme: IP66 dynamic and IP69K static ratings appear across the heavy-duty models, aimed at high-pressure cleaning on farm and construction equipment. Feedback choices on the LA36 include single and dual Hall sensors, an analogue Hall potentiometer and a mechanical potentiometer.

For sizing a DC actuator against force, speed and duty cycle, see our linear actuator sizing guide. If you are weighing a DC actuator against a hydraulic cylinder on mobile plant, our hydraulic-to-electric guide covers the trade-offs.

Industries served

LINAK’s product pages list agriculture (tractors, combine harvesters, sprayers, balers), construction (wheel loaders), industrial automation (packaging and textile machines), material handling (pallet trucks, mobile robots), marine (yachts), outdoor power equipment and wind energy. Outside TECHLINE, the company serves hospital and care equipment, office desks and home furniture.

Global and UK presence

LINAK UK Limited operates from Actuation House on Sandwell Business Park in Smethwick, West Midlands, and publishes +44 (0)121 544 2211 for enquiries. Its UK website has product pages, datasheets and a contact form. Group information and the headquarters address are on linak.com. LINAK also lists subsidiaries, sales offices and distributors on its organisation pages.

Specify Motion and LINAK

Specify Motion is independent of LINAK and is not affiliated with it. We can help source LINAK actuators, or propose electric actuators from our supply network that meet the same published force, stroke, speed and sealing figures, confirmed by an engineer. Use find a replacement to send a current model code, or browse our linear actuators hub.
