Who APEX Dynamics is
APEX Dynamics, Inc. is a Taiwanese manufacturer of precision planetary gearboxes for servo motors, with a parallel business in racks and pinions for long linear axes. On UK machines you will mostly meet it as the gearbox between a servo motor and a pulley, pinion or ball screw: compact helical planetary units in inline or right-angle form, sold through a worldwide network of national agents.
The company is best known for breadth and availability. Trade press reports a standard portfolio of around 5,000 models across its series, sizes and ratios, and APEX built its reputation on short lead times from stock in Taiwan. Its online Design Tool, with a large motor database, lets engineers pick a gearbox and motor adaptor combination and download drawings.
History and ownership
APEX was founded in 1987. Its own history says it started by making take-out robots for plastics injection moulding machines, then moved into high-precision planetary gearboxes for servo motors. Bits&Chips, a Dutch high-tech trade publication, reports that founder Robin Chang began making gearboxes himself because the low-backlash reducers his gantry robots needed, sourced from German and Japanese suppliers, arrived on unpredictable schedules.
The company completed an initial public offering in 2022 and its shares trade on the Taiwan Stock Exchange under code 4583. Its head office and main factory are in Taichung, and trade press reported in June 2026 that a third, larger factory is planned in the same region.
APEX says it makes more than 90 percent of its gearbox components in house, from heat treatment to gear finishing. Its about page describes plasma nitriding of gear teeth to a surface hardness of around 840 HV, with a tougher core to resist shock, and 100 percent assembly testing of backlash.
Product portfolio
The gearbox range is organised by precision level and shape. The series we list are:
- AB / ABR: low-backlash planetary in inline (AB) and right-angle (ABR) forms, a step up from economy ranges.
- AD / ADR / ADS: high-precision helical planetary with a one-piece planet cage and a very short body; ADS adds a keyed input shaft for belt pulleys.
- AE / AER / AES / AESR: helical planetary range, with the AES and AESR versions built in stainless steel with food-grade grease for washdown areas.
- P-II / P-IIR: the economy family for high-volume automation, inline or right-angle.
- GL / GLS: AGV gearboxes with a rotating housing so a drive wheel or pulley can mount straight onto the output.
Outside gearboxes, APEX makes precision racks and pinions, couplings and automatic lubrication units for rack drives. For background on choosing between gearbox types, see our gearboxes hub and the guide to harmonic vs planetary vs cycloidal gearing.
What APEX is known for technically
APEX gearboxes are helical planetary designs. Helical teeth run quieter and share load over more teeth than spur gears, which is why they are common on servo axes. Precision grades are expressed as backlash in arc-minutes, and APEX offers several classes so an engineer can match cost to the axis: an economy class for conveyors and indexing, and low-backlash classes for pick-and-place, gantries and rack drives.
Its right-angle units let a motor sit parallel to the machine frame, saving length on gantries and AGVs. The stainless AES series addresses food and packaging lines where painted housings and standard grease are not acceptable.
Industries served
APEX gearboxes appear on gantry robots and injection moulding take-outs (its origin), packaging and food machinery, machine tools, cutting and laser gantries using rack and pinion, and automated guided vehicles. Trade press also notes supply into automotive production lines and Dutch high-tech machine builders.
Global and UK presence
APEX sells through national companies and exclusive agents rather than one central export desk. Bits&Chips reports 39 exclusive representatives worldwide. In Europe the APEX site lists companies in Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Belgium, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.
In the UK, APEX planetary gearboxes are available through our supply network, and our engineers can help specify the right series, ratio and motor adaptor for your axis. Pricing, lead times, datasheets and CAD models are available through the enquiry form on this page.
What to send when specifying an APEX gearbox
Give the motor make and model, so the adaptor plate and input bore can be matched, then the required continuous and peak output torque, the output speed and the ratio if it is already fixed. Add the duty cycle and expected life, the allowable backlash in arc-minutes, and the radial and axial loads at the pinion, pulley or wheel, measured from the output flange. Say whether the gearbox must be inline or right-angle, and whether the environment calls for the stainless AES series. With those inputs our engineers can propose a series and frame size and check the motor fit before you order.

APEX Dynamics gearboxes
AE / AER / AES / AESR
Apex Dynamics helical planetary range in inline (AE) and right-angle (AER) forms. AES/AESR are the all-stainless body versions with food-grade grease for washdown and corrosive areas.
P-II / P-IIR
Apex Dynamics economy planetary family (PE, PG, PA, PS, PN, PD, PL sub-series) for high-volume automation; standard backlash, inline or right-angle.
AD / ADR / ADS
Apex Dynamics high-precision helical planetary with a one-piece stainless planet cage and very short length; ADS adds a keyed input shaft for belt pulley or coupling drive.
GL / GLS
Apex Dynamics AGV planetary with a rotating housing so a drive wheel or pulley can mount directly over it; GLS takes shaft input for belt drive.
AB / ABR
Apex Dynamics low-backlash planetary (inline AB, right-angle ABR), a dependable lower-backlash step up from economy ranges.
