Akribis Systems AVM Standard replacement and alternative options

Use these supply-network options as a starting point for an engineering check. We can also help source the original Akribis Systems part. Published series figures do not establish an exact-model or drop-in replacement: confirm ratings, fit, interfaces and approvals for your application.

Figures are the highest published for each series and are not always measured the same way. A higher figure is not automatically a better choice: mounting, duty cycle, feedback, connectors and approvals matter too. What a voice coil motor is

A voice coil motor, or voice coil actuator, is a direct-drive motor that produces force from a coil moving in the gap of a permanent magnet, the same principle as a loudspeaker. Force is proportional to coil current over a short stroke, typically from a fraction of a millimetre to a few tens of millimetres. There is no commutation, cogging or hysteresis, so motion is smooth and response very fast. Linear and limited-angle rotary versions exist, and guidance is usually provided externally.

When engineers choose a voice coil motor

Choose a voice coil for short strokes that need high acceleration, precise force control or high bandwidth, such as focusing, scanning, vibration isolation, haptics and test rigs. Its single-phase, cog-free design makes it simple to drive and control. The trade-offs are stroke and continuous force: thrust falls off at the ends of stroke and heat in the coil limits continuous duty. For longer travel, a linear motor or screw actuator is a better fit.

How to specify the Akribis Systems AVM Standard

Send these with your enquiry and an engineer can confirm the right AVM Standard variant:

  • Stroke (mm)
  • Peak and continuous force (N)
  • Force constant (N/A)
  • Moving mass and payload (g or kg)
  • Bandwidth or settling time (Hz, ms)
  • Guidance and feedback
  • Drive supply and current (V, A)

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the full stroke when force falls off at the ends
  • Ignoring coil heat in continuous force applications
  • Overlooking guidance and side loads
  • Running the flexible lead to the moving coil in fatigue

Akribis Systems AVM Standard: frequently asked questions

Can you help replace Akribis Systems AVM Standard or source the original?

Send the full model code, quantity and required date. Our engineers can check original-part availability and assess suitable alternatives, including supply-network options where appropriate. We confirm compatibility and any changes needed before recommending a replacement.

What is the Akribis Systems AVM Standard?

Cylindrical moving-coil voice coil motors from 12 to 90 mm frames with zero cogging and backlash, strokes up to 40 mm. Published series figures include outer diameter 12 mm, outer diameter 90 mm, peak force 340.3 N, continuous force 95.6 N. It is available through our supply network, and our engineers can confirm the right variant for your application.

What model codes are in the Akribis Systems AVM Standard range?

The AVM Standard range includes AVM12-6.4, AVM12-10, AVM12-20, AVM12-30, AVM14-10, AVM19-5, AVM20-10, AVM20-25 and 17 more. The table on this page lists each published model code with its key figures. Send us the code you use, or the one you need to replace, and our engineers will confirm availability, lead time or the closest equivalent.

Who makes the Akribis Systems AVM Standard?

The Akribis Systems AVM Standard is made by Akribis Systems available through our supply network. Send us your requirement for pricing, lead time, datasheets and CAD.

What is the outer diameter of the Akribis Systems AVM Standard?

The published series minimum outer diameter is 12 mm. Individual models and sizes in the AVM Standard range vary, so check the exact variant against your duty cycle, mounting and environment, or ask our engineers to confirm the right size for you.

Is there an alternative to the Akribis Systems AVM Standard?

We can assess suitable replacement options. On published figures, Motion Control Products MMF4 / MMD Magnet-free Track Linear Motor Modules is options to assess from our supply network. An engineer confirms the fit against your application before recommending anything.

What is the difference between a voice coil and a linear motor?

A voice coil is a single-phase device with a short stroke and no commutation, giving very smooth, fast motion. A linear motor is multi-phase, commutated and can run over long strokes. Voice coils suit precise short motion and force control; linear motors suit longer stroke positioning.

Can a voice coil control force accurately?

Yes. Because force is closely proportional to current, voice coils are well suited to force control, such as pressing delicate parts or testing. The force constant varies slightly across stroke, so calibrate or use force feedback for high precision applications.
