Who Trinamic is
Trinamic is a motion control brand that grew up in Hamburg, Germany, and is now part of Analog Devices (ADI), where it is sold as ADI Trinamic. Its products span from silicon to complete axes. They include stepper motor driver and motion controller ICs, a hardware field-oriented-control (FOC) servo controller chip, small controller/driver boards (TMCM modules) and PANdrive motors that have a module mounted on the back of a stepper motor.
For a machine designer, the Trinamic range suits small axes that need to be quiet, efficient and compact at 10 to 48 V, such as laboratory automation, small positioning stages, pumps and format adjustment on packaging machines.
History and ownership
Product documentation names the developer as TRINAMIC Motion Control GmbH & Co. KG, Hamburg, Germany. The TMC4671 datasheet carries a 2022 copyright in that name, and older manuals refer to the former website, trinamic.com. Trinamic products are now listed, documented and sold on analog.com. ADI’s product pages describe “ADI Trinamic” controller/driver chains and ADI Trinamic software. The pages we read do not give the date on which Trinamic joined the ADI group, so we have not stated one. ADI completed its acquisition of Maxim Integrated on 26 August 2021; that announcement does not mention Trinamic.
Analog Devices, Inc. was incorporated in Massachusetts in 1965 and is listed on Nasdaq as ADI. Its principal executive offices are in Wilmington, Massachusetts. ADI’s website gives about 24,000 employees and FY2025 revenue of $11.0 billion.
Product portfolio
Stepper controller/driver modules
- The TMCM-1211 (StepRocker) is a single-axis stepper board built on the TMC5160. It runs from 10–30 V with up to 5.7 A RMS and 256 microsteps, and has USB, RS485 and step/direction interfaces. It includes StealthChop, StallGuard and CoolStep.
- The TMCM-1316 adds closed-loop operation with an external encoder through the TMC4361 and TMC5160 chain, also at 10–30 V and 5.7 A RMS.
See how to select a stepper drive and closed-loop stepper motors explained.
BLDC and multi-motor modules
The TMCM-1637 is an 80 × 40 mm FOC module for BLDC, stepper and DC motors. It runs at 10–30 V, with 5 A RMS continuous and 7 A peak, ABN encoder and Hall inputs, and RS485 or CAN at 1 Mbit/s. See how to select a PCB-mount servo drive.
PANdrive integrated steppers
- The PD42-1241 is a NEMA 17 PANdrive with 0.20–0.80 Nm holding torque, 10–30 V and up to 3 A RMS. It has a 1,024-count SensOstep magnetic encoder and USB, RS485 and CAN.
- The PD-1243-IOLINK is a NEMA 17 unit (0.27 Nm) controlled over IO-Link (IEC 61131-9) on an M12 connector. It suits format-adjustment axes that a PLC sets up through an IO-Link master.
- The PD57/60-1378 pairs a NEMA 23 or 24 motor with a 12–48 V module running CANopen (CiA 301 / 402), with closed-loop operation from an external encoder.
ICs
Trinamic’s chips include the TMC5160 stepper controller/driver, the TMC4361 motion controller, the TMC4671 FOC servo controller (for PMSM, BLDC, two-phase stepper and DC/voice-coil motors, with PWM from 25 to 100 kHz). They are of interest to engineers designing their own drive boards.
Technologies
Trinamic’s named driver features appear across its stepper ICs and modules:
- StealthChop gives quiet, voltage-mode chopping at low speed.
- StallGuard detects load and stall without a sensor, so a machine can home without a switch.
- CoolStep adapts motor current to the load, which cuts heat and power.
The TMCL firmware and TMCL-IDE let a module run standalone scripts or take direct commands.
When you specify a Trinamic module, check the supply range (many modules stop at 30 V), the RMS current against your motor’s rated phase current, and whether the interface (RS485, CAN, CANopen or IO-Link) matches your controller. See servo vs stepper for the wider choice.
Module or PANdrive?
A TMCM module mounts in the cabinet or on a board and drives a motor you choose, so you can match the motor’s torque and frame to the axis. A PANdrive fixes the motor and the electronics together on the back of the motor. That saves wiring and space, and the PD42-1241’s built-in encoder can detect lost steps. The constraint is that motor size and current come as a set: the PD42-1241 offers 0.20 to 0.80 Nm on NEMA 17. Use a module plus a separate motor when the axis falls outside the PANdrive range.
Industries served
Modules and integrated steppers of this size are typically used in laboratory and medical automation, packaging and format adjustment, small positioning systems and pumps. See medical and laboratory and packaging and food.
Global and UK presence
ADI product pages show the status, pricing and stock options for each Trinamic module. ADI has sites in the USA, Ireland and Asia. No UK-specific Trinamic contact is published on the pages we read.
Specify Motion is independent of Analog Devices and Trinamic and is not a distributor for either company. Our engineers can help source Trinamic modules and PANdrive motors or propose equivalents from our supply network on published figures; see find a replacement or the servo drives hub.
