Who Stemmann-Technik is

STEMMANN-TECHNIK GmbH is a German manufacturer of energy and data transfer equipment for industrial and transport applications. It is based in Schüttorf, Lower Saxony, and is part of Wabtec Corporation. In industry it is best known for heavy-duty slip ring assemblies and cable reels on cranes and mobile machinery; in transport, for pantographs, third rail current collectors and charging systems.

For motion engineers, Stemmann-Technik belongs to the group of makers who build robust, often large and customised, carbon-brush slip ring assemblies rather than miniature precision capsules. Its slip rings are typically specified alongside a cable reel or conductor line, as part of the power supply to a slewing or travelling machine.

History and ownership

The company’s history page sets out a long industrial lineage:

  • 1912: founded by the engineer August Stemmann in Luxembourg, initially supplying power to cranes in steel and smelting works and to other mobile equipment. Slip ring assemblies for rotating equipment and pantographs for railway vehicles were added later.
  • 1984: Stemmann becomes part of the Fandstan Electric Group, a private holding company with subsidiaries in several countries, including Great Britain.
  • 2014: the Fandstan period ends and the company joins Wabtec Corporation, the US rail and industrial engineering group.
  • 2016: Faiveley Transport is integrated into Wabtec, which the page says makes Stemmann part of one of the world’s largest public rail equipment companies, with more than 20,000 employees.

Today Stemmann-Technik serves two Wabtec product lines: Charging and Power Transfer, and Power Collection. Its legal notice names STEMMANN-TECHNIK GmbH, registered at Osnabrück under HRB 130213. The website does not publish a headcount for the Schüttorf site.

Product portfolio

Stemmann-Technik publishes few numeric ratings because most assemblies are configured per project. Our series records capture what is published:

  • FP series: modular carbon/brass assemblies. The FPKK, in glass-fibre reinforced plastic, carries 25, 50 or 100 A per ring with 500 V AC insulation and up to PE + 17 poles; the FPKR uses a steel housing. The page quotes IP65 in its text and IP66 in its table, so confirm the rating.
  • MK series: MKSR, MKSRR and MKSK heavy-duty assemblies for high currents and many paths, with MKSK units rated for current loads up to 1,200 A, protection up to IP65 and split covers for maintenance.
  • LP series bako: a modular contact-plate system from 46 mm to 950 mm with free bores up to 950 mm, flat or concentric low-height designs, and medium-voltage options up to 30 kV.
  • Explosion-proof slip ring assemblies: pressurised or flameproof enclosures configured to the customer’s zone and temperature class, for example with a 300 mm central bore and an integrated fibre optic rotary joint.

Outside slip rings, the company makes motor-driven and spring cable reels, festoons, conductor lines and charging systems.

Technologies and standards

Stemmann-Technik lists six contact technologies: carbon/brass for standard modular assemblies, contact plates for compact power and LAN, fieldbus or Ethernet signals, gold-spring wire for compact high-vibration units, carbon/carbon for very high speeds and medium voltage, multiwire contacts for flat, low-noise designs, and its SICL 10 conductor-line system for large concentric rings with a minimum arc radius of 300 mm. Options include thermostatic anti-condensation heaters, encoder mounts, protection tubes and media distributors.

For guidance on specifying this class of ring, see our pages on high-current slip rings, large-diameter slip rings, slip rings for cranes and slewing and slip rings for cable reels.

Industries served

Stemmann-Technik’s slip ring pages name cranes, wind energy systems, radar installations, steel and smelting plant, and explosion-hazard areas. Across its wider range it serves ports and material handling, rail and urban transit, electric buses, electric ferries and vehicle charging.

Points to check when comparing Stemmann-Technik assemblies

Heavy-duty carbon/brass assemblies are usually configured to order, so compare the full specification rather than the series name: current per ring and duty cycle, insulation voltage, number of poles including earth, speed, IP rating, heater requirement and mounting. Check whether the published current is per ring or for the assembly. For cable reel and crane applications, agree the slip ring and the reel or festoon as one system, because the reel’s speed and mounting orientation drive the ring’s design.

Global and UK presence

Stemmann-Technik produces in Germany and says it has locations in Europe and agencies worldwide, including Asia and the USA. Its English contact pages list the Schüttorf head office and Wabtec sales directors but no UK office or agent, so UK engineers can deal directly with the Schüttorf sales team at stemmann-sales@wabtec.com or +49 5923 81-0.

What to send when specifying a Stemmann-Technik slip ring assembly

Give the number of poles with current and voltage for each, earth requirements, any signal, bus or Ethernet paths, bore or protection tube size, speed, mounting orientation, environment (temperature, IP, condensation, salt or dust), any hazardous-area classification, and whether a cable reel or media distributor is part of the same system.

Specify Motion is independent of Stemmann-Technik. Our engineers can help source Stemmann-Technik products or propose equivalents from our supply network on published figures; see find a replacement or the slip rings hub.
