Who Siemens is
Siemens AG is a German technology group headquartered in Munich. For motion control engineers its relevant business is Digital Industries, which, in the group’s own description, supplies automation systems and software for factories, numerical control systems, servo motors, drives and inverters, and integrated automation systems for machine tools and production machines. Siemens servo motors are sold under the SIMOTICS name, drives under SINAMICS and controllers under SIMATIC. These names are trademarks of Siemens AG.
The group is very large: it reported revenue of €78.9 billion for fiscal 2025 and around 318,000 employees at 30 September 2025. This profile concentrates on the servo motor and drive part of that business, the part a machine builder specifies.
History and ownership
Werner von Siemens founded the company with the precision mechanic Johann Georg Halske in Berlin. The Telegraphen-Bauanstalt von Siemens & Halske began work on 12 October 1847 with ten employees. Munich became the headquarters of Siemens & Halske in 1949, and Siemens AG was formed on 1 October 1966, absorbing Siemens & Halske, Siemens-Schuckertwerke and Siemens-Reiniger-Werke.
In automation, the company’s own timeline marks 1959 as the introduction of SIMATIC, which it describes as the first transistorised control system and the basis for its electronic industrial automation business. More recently the group has narrowed its focus: Siemens Healthineers was carved out and listed in 2018, and Siemens Energy was spun off and listed in September 2020. The current headquarters building in Munich opened in 2016.
Siemens AG is publicly owned. Its shares trade on the Frankfurt stock exchange and Xetra under the symbol SIE, with American depositary receipts under SIEGY.
Motion control portfolio
Servo motors
The current SIMOTICS S generation for the SINAMICS S210 one-cable system is the 1FK2, a naturally cooled compact motor in several inertia classes, the higher-performance 1FT2 with forced-ventilation options and IP67 sealing, and the hygienic stainless-steel 1FS2 for food, beverage and pharmaceutical washdown. The long-established 1FK7 and 1FT7 motors serve SINAMICS S120 machines, the latter with natural, forced-air or water cooling. For cost-sensitive axes there are the 1FL6 for SINAMICS V90 and the newer 1FL2 for SINAMICS S200, with battery-free multi-turn encoders.
Servo drives
The SINAMICS S210 is a single-axis drive designed around single-cable motor connection and close integration with SIMATIC controllers over PROFINET IRT. The SINAMICS S200 and SINAMICS V90 are single-axis drives offering pulse-train or PROFINET control for simpler machines. The modular SINAMICS S120 covers single- and multi-axis machines, running servo or vector control of synchronous and induction motors over DRIVE-CLiQ. Our servo drive hub and servo motor hub explain how to size the pair.
Technologies and standards
The Siemens motion range is built around PROFINET as the control network (with PROFINET IRT for the S210), DRIVE-CLiQ as the drive-to-motor link on S120, and single-cable connection on the S210 family, where power and encoder data share one motor cable. The V90 and S200 also accept pulse-train commands, so they can be driven by controllers from other makers.
In practice, a Siemens servo axis is usually chosen as part of a complete Siemens controller, drive and motor system rather than as a standalone part. That matters when you look for second sources: the motor’s encoder protocol and connector system are matched to a particular SINAMICS drive, so a replacement motor normally means checking the drive as well.
Industries served
Siemens positions its motion products for machine tools and production machines, and its Digital Industries business also supplies the numerical control systems used on machine tools. The stainless 1FS2 motor is aimed specifically at food, beverage and pharmaceutical machines that are washed down, while the 1FL2 and 1FL6 families target cost-sensitive general-purpose axes.
Global and UK presence
Siemens operates in most industrial countries. In the UK, Companies House lists Siemens plc (company number 00727817), incorporated on 25 June 1962, with its registered office at Pinehurst 2, Pinehurst Road, Farnborough, Hampshire GU14 7BF. The British connection is much older: the company’s history records a sales office in England within three years of its founding, an independent English company headed by William Siemens from 1858 and a cable works at Woolwich from 1863.
For automation and drives, the Digital Industries United Kingdom contact page lists 0808 234 2244 for the UK and 1800 507600 for Ireland, plus an enquiry form for quotes, orders and repairs, on-site service, technical support and training. When contacting Siemens or any supplier about an installed axis, quote the full order number from the motor and drive rating plates, the drive firmware version if known, and whether the machine uses a SIMATIC controller over PROFINET.
Sourcing Siemens motion parts through Specify Motion
Specify Motion is independent of Siemens and is not affiliated with it. We can help source SIMOTICS and SINAMICS parts for an installed machine, or propose servo motors and drives from our supply network that meet the same published figures. See our Siemens alternatives page for what to check, or send the part number through find a replacement.
