Who Lika Electronic is

Lika Electronic is an Italian manufacturer of position and speed sensors, based in Carrè in the province of Vicenza. Its catalogue covers rotary encoders (incremental, absolute and bearingless), magnetic linear encoders, draw-wire encoders, rotary actuators and inclinometers. Engineers usually meet Lika as a broad-line encoder supplier with strong options for SSI and BiSS feedback, stainless and heavy-duty housings, and magnetic tape systems.

History and ownership

Lika was founded in Schio in 1982. It began making absolute encoders for the German market in 1985 and, by 1993, offered a complete 58 mm encoder portfolio. In 1996 it launched the ROTACAM ASR58, an absolute encoder with an integrated cam programmer, and in 1997 it gained ISO 9001 certification. The DRIVECOD and POSICONTROL ranges (rotary actuators and position displays) followed in 2002.

Lika also has a record in science and space. Its encoders flew on the Rosetta comet probe launched in 2004, and it supplied custom encoders for the ALMA radio telescope array in 2008. In 2010 it added a heavy-duty range for steel and wind power. Lika South East Asia was founded in Thailand in 2013, and in 2020 Lika acquired BOGEN Electronic, now renamed BOGEN Magnetics, a German maker of magnetic measuring systems.

The website does not name any parent company, so Lika appears to be independently owned.

Product portfolio

Lika lists 42 absolute and 49 incremental rotary encoders, plus 19 incremental linear products. The series below are the ones we have profiled.

Absolute rotary encoders

  • The EHO58 / EHM58 is a 58 mm multiturn encoder with optical (EHO) or magnetic (EHM) sensing. It reaches up to 24-bit single-turn and 16-bit multiturn resolution over SSI or BiSS-C, with IP67 sealing and 6,000 rpm. The multiturn count uses energy harvesting, with no battery or gear train.
  • The EHCT59 is an optical hollow-shaft version with up to 25-bit single-turn and 15-bit multiturn resolution, aimed at motor feedback.
  • The MS36 / MSC36 is a compact 36 mm magnetic single-turn encoder with 13-bit SSI output and speeds up to 12,000 rpm.

Lika also offers “R.” versions of the EHO58 and EHCT59 as spares to replace older ES58, EM58, HS58, HM58 and HSCT/HMCT encoders that are no longer available. That is useful to know if you maintain older machines.

Incremental rotary encoders

The I58 / I58S is Lika’s general-purpose 58 mm incremental encoder. It offers up to 10,000 pulses per revolution with NPN, PNP, push-pull, line-driver, universal or sin/cos outputs, shafts from 6 to 12 mm and speeds up to 12,000 rpm. Stainless I58SK and programmable IQ36 variants sit alongside it.

Linear encoders

The SME21 is a contactless magnetic sensor head with 1 µm resolution that reads Lika’s magnetic tape. The MTI tape is available in lengths up to 100 m. For linear and torque motors, the SME11 goes down to 0.5 µm.

Technologies and standards

  • Energy-harvesting multiturn. The EH-series encoders count turns without batteries or gears, so absolute position survives power loss without maintenance.
  • SSI and BiSS-C. Lika’s high-resolution absolute encoders favour these point-to-point interfaces, which suit servo feedback. Its EXO58/EXM58 family adds Ethernet interfaces.
  • Magnetic tape systems. Tape and sensor kits measure long axes cheaply where an enclosed glass scale would be too long or too fragile.

See how to select an encoder, how to select a linear encoder and encoder interfaces explained for the trade-offs.

Industries served

Lika’s history and product pages point to general automation, heavy industry (steel, wind turbines), woodworking and sheet-metal machinery, and scientific and space projects. Its rotary actuators target format changes on packaging and processing machines.

Choosing a resolution

As a worked example, a 24-bit single-turn encoder resolves about 0.00002° per count. That is far finer than most mechanical systems can hold, so for a conveyor or crane a 13-bit device such as the MS36 is usually enough. Reserve 20-bit and above for direct-drive servo axes and precision rotary tables.

Global and UK presence

Lika’s head office in Carrè handles international sales, with subsidiaries in Germany (Lika Electronic GmbH, Harsewinkel) and Thailand (Lika South East Asia). There is no UK office listed. UK buyers should check Lika’s worldwide distributor directory for current representation.

Replacing an older Lika encoder

If an encoder on an existing machine carries an ES58, EM58, HS58, HM58, HSCT or HMCT part number, start with the R. version of the EHO58/EHM58 or EHCT59 that Lika lists as its spare-part replacement. Check the interface, code type, connector pinout and shaft before ordering.

What to send when specifying an encoder

Send the resolution (single-turn and multiturn), interface, shaft or bore, speed, IP rating and temperature range. For linear systems, add the measuring length, required resolution and the air gap you can hold.

Specify Motion is independent of Lika Electronic and is not a distributor for the company. Our engineers can help source Lika encoders or propose equivalents from our supply network on published figures; see find a replacement or the encoders hub.
