Who MAB Robotics is
MAB Robotics is a Polish company that develops motion control hardware and robots. Its two product families are the MD-series brushless motor controllers and the MA-series actuators, which combine a brushless motor, an MD controller and, in most versions, a reducer. Its stated aim is to help industries go beyond human capabilities with motion control and robotic technology.
For OEM engineers, MAB is a European source of compact torque-controlled joint drives, with English documentation and controllers marked as made in the EU.
History and ownership
The company is MAB Robotics Sp. z o.o., registered in Poznań with NIP PL7822870297 and REGON 38440292700000. The website does not give a founding date, headcount or shareholders, so we have not stated them.
Product portfolio
MD controllers
The MD80 is a Ø55 mm field-oriented controller for brushless motors. On current hardware (V3.0 and later) it accepts 10 to 48 V DC, delivers 20 A continuous phase current without cooling and 80 A peak for 2 seconds, and talks FDCAN at 1, 2, 5 or 8 Mbps. A 14-bit absolute encoder is on board, with SPI and RS422 inputs for an output-side encoder. Torque and impedance loops run at 40 kHz, velocity at 5 kHz and position at 1 kHz. A smaller Ø35 mm controller with 20 A peak current is also listed.
MA actuators
All MA actuators share 10 to 60 V DC supply ranges (by model), CAN FD or CANopen, and options for IP66 sealing, an output encoder, a torque sensor and an electromagnetic brake.
- The MA-D direct-drive actuators have no gearbox, so they are fully backdrivable with no backlash. Sizes run from gl30 to gl100, with hollow-shaft versions. The MA-D-gl80 gives 1 Nm rated, 2.9 Nm peak and 2,390 rpm at 48 V in a Ø87 mm, 339 g package.
- The MA-p planetary actuators add a planetary reducer. The MA-p-80-IP66 gives 9 Nm rated and 18 Nm peak at 9:1 (or 6/12 Nm at 6:1), 9 arcmin backlash and dual absolute encoders in a Ø100 mm, 0.5 kg IP66 housing.
- The MA-H harmonic actuators use a strain-wave reducer for zero-backlash, high-precision joints. The MA-hs-h-IP66 is the hollow-shaft version.
Technologies
The MA range shows the main trade-off in robot joints clearly. Direct drive gives the best transparency and impact tolerance but the least torque per kilogram. A low-ratio planetary (quasi-direct-drive) keeps good backdrivability with several times the torque. A harmonic reducer gives the highest ratio and precision but is stiffer to backdrive and less tolerant of shock.
See harmonic vs planetary vs cycloidal, how to select a harmonic actuator and how to select a PCB-mount servo drive.
Industries served
MAB’s controllers and actuators are built for torque-controlled joints, so they suit legged and humanoid robots, exoskeletons, robot arms, haptic devices and research platforms. The IP66 options and CANopen support extend them to outdoor robots and to machines that use a standard industrial bus.
Worked example: direct drive or planetary?
A hip joint needs 8 Nm continuous and 15 Nm peak. The MA-D-gl80 (1 Nm rated) is far too small, and even the largest direct-drive size would need checking. The MA-p-80 at 9:1 gives 9 Nm rated and 18 Nm peak, so it covers the duty with margin, and its 390 rpm at 48 V is ample for walking gaits. If the joint must also absorb ground impacts, its 9:1 ratio keeps reflected inertia lower than a high-ratio harmonic unit.
Things that catch engineers out
- Peak current duration. The MD80’s 80 A peak is limited to 2 seconds; repeated bursts heat the board.
- Supply version. Older MD80 hardware ran on 18 to 28 V; check the hardware revision before reusing a design.
- Output encoder. Without an output encoder, a geared actuator only knows the motor angle, so a homing move may be needed after power-up.
Choosing the bus settings
CAN FD at 8 Mbps carries far more data than classic CAN at 1 Mbps, but cable length, stub length and termination limit what is achievable. As a rule of thumb, keep buses short and terminated at both ends, and test the error rate on the real machine before raising the bit rate. The MD80’s software-controlled termination resistor makes this easier on a chain of joints.
Global and UK presence
MAB sells direct through its online shop and lists no UK office or distributors. As an EU manufacturer, its products ship to the UK; check import paperwork and UKCA marking for the finished machine.
What to send when specifying a joint actuator
Send the continuous and peak joint torque, speed, supply voltage, required backlash and backdrivability, whether you need an output encoder or brake, the IP rating and the bus your controller uses.
Specify Motion is independent of MAB Robotics and is not a distributor for the company. Our engineers can help source equivalents from our supply network on published figures; see find a replacement or the servo drives hub.
