Who ElectroCraft is

ElectroCraft describes itself as a global provider of application-engineered fractional-horsepower motor and motion products. Its range covers brushless DC motors, stepper motors, step linear actuators, gearmotors, wheel drives, brushed DC and AC motors, and the low-voltage drives to run them. It offers standard products with configurable options as well as custom OEM designs.

For OEM engineers, ElectroCraft is mainly a source of compact brushless and stepper motors under about 1 kW, and of matching 12 to 90 V DC drives for battery-powered and mobile equipment.

History and ownership

The legal entity named on the contact page is ElectroCraft, Inc., at 2 Marin Way, Stratham, New Hampshire. The company lists locations in the USA, Germany, China and Taiwan. Its company pages do not give a founding date, headcount or parent company. The site header links to Hansen Corporation, another motor brand, but does not explain the relationship, so we have not stated one.

Product portfolio

Brushless DC motors

  • The RapidPower Xtreme (RPX) covers small frames of 16.25, 22, 32, 40 and 52 mm with 12, 24 or 48 V windings. Peak torque runs from 35 mNm on the RPX16 to 3.15 Nm on the RPX52. LRPX planetary gearmotor versions reach 22.5 Nm peak.
  • The RapidPower (RP) uses NEMA 17, 23 and 34 frames for 12 to 160 V DC, with 0.1 to 2.1 Nm continuous and up to 7.73 Nm peak torque, and peak efficiency above 85 to 90 %.
  • The RapidPower Plus (RPP) is the higher-power range: up to 4 Nm continuous and 16 Nm peak, 300 % overload, speeds to 5,000 rpm and windings for supplies up to 325 V.

Stepper motors

The TorquePower steppers are 1.8° hybrid motors. The TPE range covers NEMA 11 to 23 (0.16 to 2.08 Nm holding torque), the TPP34 reaches 8.4 Nm, and the sealed TP series runs from NEMA 23 to NEMA 42 at 14.8 Nm. Bipolar and unipolar windings and encoder options are offered.

Drives

  • The PRO Series programmable drives run on 9 to 90 V DC, from 4 A continuous / 10 A peak to 50 A continuous / 90 A peak, with RS-232, CANopen or EtherCAT.
  • The CompletePower Plus Universal and EZ drives cover 12 to 80 V DC with up to 40 A continuous and 100 A peak, set up over USB with optional CAN. The EZ versions for brushless motors run 12 to 48 V up to 24 A.

Other products

ElectroCraft also lists step linear actuators, right-angle and mobility gearmotors, MPW wheel drives that combine a BLDC motor and a heavy-duty gearbox, PMDC brush motors and AC motors.

Technologies

ElectroCraft’s strength is matched motor and drive sets for low-voltage DC systems. That matters for battery-powered equipment, where the drive must handle wide supply swings and regenerative energy. The EtherCAT option on the larger PRO drives lets a mobile robot or AGV put traction and steering axes on the same network as its controller.

For background, see brushed vs brushless motors, how to select a DC motor and how to select a stepper motor.

Industries served

ElectroCraft’s range includes MPW wheel drives and mobility gearmotors for mobile equipment, and drives built for 12 to 90 V DC systems. In practice, its compact BLDC motors and steppers are typical of portable and medical devices, pumps and fans, laboratory automation and general industrial automation.

Worked example: choosing a BLDC frame

A 24 V AGV turntable needs 1.5 Nm continuous and 4 Nm for short accelerations. The RP series covers up to 2.1 Nm continuous, so an RP23 or RP34 is the starting point, depending on the winding. If the peak demand grew to 10 Nm, you would move to the RPP34 (16 Nm peak) and a supply that suits its winding. Pair it with a PRO or CompletePower drive sized for the motor’s peak current, and confirm thermal performance at your duty cycle.

Things that catch engineers out

  • Battery voltage swings. A nominal 24 V pack may sit near 29 V when charged and fall below 21 V when flat. Check the motor’s speed at the low end and the drive’s limit at the high end.
  • Peak versus continuous. The RPP’s 300 % overload is for short accelerations; size the motor on RMS torque over the cycle.
  • Regeneration. Decelerating loads push energy back into the supply, so plan for a braking resistor or a battery that can absorb it.

Global and UK presence

ElectroCraft has no UK office listed. Its EMEA sales team is based in Germany, and the website has a sales-representative finder. UK engineers can contact the EMEA team directly for quotes and application support.

What to send when specifying a motor and drive

Send the continuous and peak torque, speed range, supply voltage (and its minimum and maximum if battery-powered), duty cycle, feedback needs (Hall, encoder), the bus your controller uses, the envelope and the environment.

Specify Motion is independent of ElectroCraft and is not a distributor for the company. Our engineers can help source ElectroCraft products or propose equivalents from our supply network on published figures; see find a replacement, the servo and stepper motors hub or the servo drives hub.
