Who Omron is
OMRON Corporation is a Japanese technology group based in Kyoto, working in industrial automation, electronic components and healthcare, with products and services in about 130 countries. Its industrial automation business supplies machine builders with controllers, servo systems, linear motors and axes, sensors and safety products.
For motion engineers, Omron is known for its Sysmac platform, in which one machine controller runs logic, motion, safety and data handling over EtherCAT and is programmed in one tool, Sysmac Studio. This profile concentrates on Omron’s servo drives, servo motors and motion controllers.
History and ownership
The company’s founder, Kazuma Tateisi, started making and selling trouser presses in Kyoto in 1930. Sales were weak, and the business that lasted grew from hospital demand for faster X-ray timers: Tateisi Electric Manufacturing Co. was established on 10 May 1933 as a three-employee factory. The company was incorporated on 19 May 1948, and in 1959 the founder set the corporate motto that the group still uses, “To improve lives and contribute to a better society”.
Omron’s history page credits it with a run of firsts, including the non-contact proximity switch, automatic traffic signals and, in 1971, what it describes as the world’s first online cash dispenser. Today OMRON Corporation is an independent company and the parent of the OMRON Group, which reported 26,050 employees at 31 March 2026, with capital of JPY 64 billion. Its president and CEO is Junta Tsujinaga.
Servo and motion portfolio
Servo drives
The 1S servo drives run on EtherCAT and cover 50 W to 1.5 kW on 230 V single-phase and 400 W to 15 kW on 400 V three-phase. Hardwired Safe Torque Off is rated SIL 3 / PL e and network STO SIL 2 / PL d. Two further 1S variants add SS1 and SLS, or a full set of motion safety functions (SS1, SS2, SOS, SLS, SLP, SDI, SBC) to SIL 3 / PL e. Accurax G5, C6 and SmartStep 2 drives complete the range.
Servo motors
The 1S servo motors (R88M-1) run from 0.05 to 15 kW with rated torque from 0.159 to 95.5 Nm, rated speeds of 1,000 to 3,000 rpm and IP67 protection. Their 23-bit battery-free absolute encoder counts 65,536 turns, so the machine does not need a homing run after power-up. Omron also offers Accurax G5, C6 and G-series motors and Accurax linear motors. Our servo vs stepper guide explains when a servo is worth the extra cost.
Machine and motion controllers
The Sysmac controllers scale by axis count. The NX1P2 controller is a compact unit with built-in I/O, up to 8 motion axes and 4 single-axis positioning axes, and up to 16 EtherCAT slaves. The NJ5 controller handles up to 64 axes, with a 0.5 ms primary task cycle on the NJ501-1500 and options for robotics and direct database connection. The NX7 CPU is the top model, with two motion cores, up to 256 axes, a 125 µs cycle and 512 EtherCAT nodes.
For very high-precision or high-speed motion, the CK3M and CK5M controllers are based on Power PMAC technology. They control up to 16 or 32 local axes, run a servo cycle as short as 50 µs for 5 axes and can drive amplifiers directly by PWM or analogue command. They are programmed in G-code, C or PMAC Script. Our motion controller hub compares these approaches.
Technologies and standards
Omron builds its motion range around EtherCAT, with safety functions carried over the network as well as hardwired, rated to IEC 61508 (SIL) and EN ISO 13849-1 (PL). Sysmac controllers are programmed in ladder and structured text and connect to plant systems over EtherNet/IP and OPC UA. Battery-free multi-turn encoders on the 1S motors remove a maintenance item that older absolute systems carried.
Industries served
Omron’s own product pages point to the kinds of machine its motion range is built for: the NX7 for large multi-axis lines, the NJ5 with robotics and database options for automated cells, and the Power PMAC-based CK3M and CK5M for ultra-high-speed synchronous control, which suits precision equipment such as electronics and laser processing machines. Packaging and assembly machines are typical homes for the 1S servo system; see our packaging and food and semiconductor and electronics pages.
Global and UK presence
Omron runs regional head offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, the Netherlands and Chicago. In Europe, OMRON Europe B.V. is in Hoofddorp, near Amsterdam, and the European organisation has its own development and manufacturing facilities. In the UK, OMRON Electronics Ltd is at 1 Seebeck Place, Knowlhill, Milton Keynes MK5 8FR, telephone +44 1908 258 258, with separate lines for sales, technical support and customer service. UK engineers can buy from Omron directly or through the partners listed on its UK website.
Sourcing Omron servo parts through Specify Motion
Specify Motion is independent of Omron and is not affiliated with it. We can help you source Omron servo and motion parts for an existing machine, or propose equivalent servo motors and drives from our supply network on published figures. The find a replacement form is the quickest way to send a part number.
