Who Panasonic is in motion control

Panasonic is a Japanese electronics group whose industrial products are made and sold by Panasonic Industry Co., Ltd., one of the operating companies under Panasonic Holdings Corporation. Among its factory automation products, the one machine builders know best is MINAS, a long-running family of AC servo motors and drivers used on electronics assembly, semiconductor, packaging and general machines. Panasonic Industry Europe’s catalogue also lists motion controllers, FP-series PLCs, human-machine interfaces, laser markers and ionisers.

This profile concentrates on the MINAS servo motors and servo drivers. MINAS is a Panasonic trade name; in Europe the products are sold through Panasonic Industry Europe.

History and ownership

Panasonic’s holding company traces the group to March 1918, when Konosuke Matsushita founded Matsushita Electric Housewares Manufacturing Works in Osaka. The business was incorporated in December 1935 as Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., and was later renamed Panasonic Corporation.

On 1 April 2022 the group moved to an operating company structure, with Panasonic Holdings Corporation as the holding company and the businesses run by operating companies such as Panasonic Industry Co., Ltd. The holding company is at 1006 Kadoma, Kadoma City, Osaka, and reported 183,685 consolidated employees for the year to March 2026. Panasonic Industry gives its own address as 1006, Oaza Kadoma, Kadoma-shi, Osaka 571-8506.

Servo portfolio

MINAS A7

The MINAS A7 servo motors are Panasonic’s newest family, from 50 W to 1.5 kW on 100 V or 200 V driver input. Panasonic quotes a 27-bit encoder, a speed response frequency of 4.0 kHz or more, which it says is 125% of the previous models, overload operating time 1.9 times longer, and maximum speeds up to 7,150 rpm. The motors come in four series: MSMG (low inertia) and MHMG (high inertia) from 50 W to 1.5 kW in 38 to 130 mm flanges, and the middle-inertia MDMG and MGMG in a 130 mm flange, the MGMG being a low-speed, high-torque design.

The matching MINAS A7B servo drivers are EtherCAT drivers with a built-in safety function, running from single- or three-phase 200 to 240 V AC, with USB for set-up and monitoring.

MINAS A6

The MINAS A6 family covers a much wider span, from 50 W to 22 kW, with drivers for 24 V and 48 V DC as well as 100, 200 and 400 V AC. It uses a 23-bit absolute or incremental encoder, with a battery-less option, and a 3.2 kHz frequency response. The motors (MSMF, MQMF and MHMF series, plus geared versions) are IP67, though flanges of 80 mm and smaller are order-made in that rating. Drivers include the A6SE, A6SG, A6SF, A6B, A6N, A6V and A6BU, plus the MINAS A6 Multi multi-axis driver.

Reading MINAS part numbers

MINAS motor part numbers start with the series code, so an A7 motor such as MHMG012U1B2 belongs to the MHMG series, and A7B drivers carry numbers beginning MADN, MBDN or MCDN followed by a rating and interface code. When asking for a replacement or an equivalent, quote the full number from both the motor and driver nameplates, because, as with most servo makers, options such as brake, shaft and interface are usually carried in the suffix.

Panasonic also lists MINAS LIQI drives for simpler applications and a motion controller range. For background on choosing between servo and stepper technology, see our servo vs stepper guide and the servo drive hub.

Technologies and standards

The MINAS families compete on control performance and encoder resolution: each generation has raised the speed response (3.2 kHz for A6, 4.0 kHz for A7) and the encoder resolution (23-bit to 27-bit). EtherCAT is offered on the A7B drivers, and the A6 family spans several driver types for different interfaces. Low-voltage DC drivers in the A6 family suit battery-powered and mobile machines. Our absolute vs incremental encoders guide explains why battery-less absolute feedback matters.

Industries served

MINAS servos are commonly found where a compact, fast-settling axis is needed: electronics and semiconductor equipment, robot and handling axes, packaging and general machine building. See our semiconductor and electronics and AGV and AMR intralogistics pages for the motion needs of those markets.

Global and UK presence

In Europe, Panasonic Industry Europe GmbH in Ottobrunn, near Munich, is the regional headquarters, telephone +49 89 45354 1000. In the UK, Panasonic’s global network page lists Panasonic Industry UK Ltd. at Sunrise Parkway, Linford Wood, Milton Keynes MK14 6LF, telephone +44 1908 231 555. The European website has a contact form and a regional office search, which UK engineers can use to find the right sales contact for MINAS products.
