Linear actuator force and screw torque calculator

Estimate one upward-motion load case, screw torque, screw speed and mechanical output power. Prepare the figures for an actuator selection enquiry.

No registration is needed to calculate. Review the method, assumptions and worked example before using the figures.

Method and assumptions

F = m(a + g sinθ) + F_process + F_friction; T_screw = F × lead / (2π × η)

This simplified load case assumes motion and acceleration up an incline, with process and friction forces opposing motion. Use 0° for horizontal and 90° for vertical upward travel. Screw lead and speed are entered in mm/revolution and mm/s; the calculation converts to SI units. Include every mass moved by this axis.

Illustrative worked example

Illustrative horizontal load: 10 kg, 1 m/s² acceleration, 100 N opposing process force, 0 N friction, 5 mm lead, 90% efficiency and 100 mm/s gives 110 N, about 0.0973 Nm screw torque, 1,200 rpm and 11 W mechanical output. Rotating inertia and additional losses remain to be assessed.

What the result does not establish

This is one motoring load case, not complete actuator sizing. It excludes rotating inertia, deceleration, backdriving, side loads, buckling, critical speed, screw/bearing life, thermal duty and machine safety. Calculated screw torque is before any motor gearbox. Check every move and dwell separately.

These are general preliminary calculations, not an engineer-approved design, customer case study or product recommendation. Use the exact manufacturer's ratings and installation conditions for final selection.
