Define the web and the roll
Film, paper, foil, textiles and cable impose different constraints. Record the material, web width, permitted tension range, line speed, core diameter, maximum roll diameter and roll mass. State whether the axis winds, unwinds or operates bidirectionally.
At a simple steady operating point, roll torque is tension force multiplied by roll radius. That relationship is only the beginning: acceleration, friction, transmission losses and changing inertia remain to be added. A motor adequate at the empty core can be unsuitable for a full-roll acceleration, or vice versa at high core speed.
Compare the operating extremes
| Condition | Check |
|---|---|
| Empty core | Maximum rotational speed at the required line speed |
| Full roll | Torque, inertia, bearing and shaft loads |
| Accelerating or stopping | Peak torque, controlled tension and energy flow |
| Low-speed operation | Smoothness, friction effects and the chosen control method |
Do not combine maximum roll diameter and maximum shaft speed as though they necessarily occur together. Describe the real operating envelope so the proposed drive and motor can be evaluated at meaningful points.
Decide how tension is established
Load cells, dancer mechanisms and torque-based control can form part of different system approaches. Identify the existing control architecture and whether the enquiry concerns components only or a wider control-system change. Feedback location, sampling and mechanics affect the result; a general-purpose torque-capable drive is not a complete tension-control solution by itself.
For an unwinding or decelerating axis, discuss regeneration and braking-energy handling. The solution depends on the power architecture and the duty. It should be checked by the responsible system designer rather than inferred from a motor power rating.
An illustrative comparison
With all other assumptions unchanged, doubling roll radius doubles the torque needed for the same tangential tension. It also changes the rotational speed needed for the same web speed. This simple relationship explains why an average roll diameter is a poor sole basis for selection. It is not a verified design or a customer performance claim.
Send the roll limits, line speed, tension range and acceleration profile, plus any existing motor, drive and controller codes. We can discuss the component selection and sourcing route, with controls engineering and commissioning requirements specified separately.
Turn the requirement into an enquiry
Send the application, quantities and deadline, plus any existing model codes. We can discuss the original part, alternatives or a matched package. Compatibility, availability and supply arrangements are confirmed for the specific enquiry.
