What a HD video slip ring is

An HD video slip ring is a rotary joint designed to pass high-definition video signals, such as SDI, HDMI or analogue HD, through continuous rotation. Video needs controlled impedance, low crosstalk and a stable contact, so the video rings use precious-metal contacts, matched geometry and screening from power circuits. HDMI uses several differential pairs, which need a matched set of rings. These units commonly combine video channels with power, control and data circuits for a rotating camera.

When engineers choose a HD video slip ring

Choose an HD video slip ring when a camera on a rotating platform must send uncompressed video, such as broadcast heads, surveillance turrets and inspection systems, and converting to IP video or fibre would add latency or cost. The trade-offs are channel count and bandwidth: each HD channel uses several rings, and higher formats are harder to pass cleanly. Where many cameras or 4K signals are needed, a fibre optic rotary joint or video over Ethernet is often the more scalable route.

How to specify the High Definition (HD) Slip Ring

Send these with your enquiry and an engineer can confirm the right High Definition (HD) Slip Ring variant:

  • Video format and resolution, such as HD-SDI, 3G-SDI or HDMI
  • Number of video channels
  • Cable length and type on each side (m)
  • Other data and control signals, such as RS422 or Ethernet
  • Power circuits and current (A)
  • Speed (rpm)
  • Environment and IP rating

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting that HDMI needs several matched pairs, not a single coaxial channel
  • Ignoring the cable lengths either side, which add to signal loss
  • Placing video rings next to motor power without screening
  • Specifying 4K over contact rings without checking bandwidth

High Definition (HD) Slip Ring: frequently asked questions

Can you help replace High Definition (HD) Slip Ring or source the original?

Send the full model code, quantity and required date. Our engineers can check original-part availability and assess suitable alternatives, including supply-network options where appropriate. We confirm compatibility and any changes needed before recommending a replacement.

What is the High Definition (HD) Slip Ring?

Gold-contact slip rings for uncompressed HD video (HDMI, SDI) mixed with USB, Ethernet, RF and RS422, rated for 1080P at 60Hz and beyond. Published series figures include circuits 32, current per circuit 60 A, speed 250 rpm, bore 4 mm. It is available through our supply network, and our engineers can confirm the right variant for your application.

Who makes the High Definition (HD) Slip Ring?

The High Definition (HD) Slip Ring is part of a range available through our supply network. Send us your requirement for pricing, lead time, datasheets and CAD.

What is the circuits of the High Definition (HD) Slip Ring?

The published series maximum circuits is 32. Individual models and sizes in the High Definition (HD) Slip Ring range vary, so check the exact variant against your duty cycle, mounting and environment, or ask our engineers to confirm the right size for you.

Can 4K video pass through a slip ring?

It depends on the format and channel design. Contact rings can pass HD-SDI and some higher-rate SDI, but very high bandwidths become difficult because of loss and crosstalk. For 4K, many systems use a fibre optic rotary joint, contactless transmission or compress the video to IP before the slip ring. Give the exact format and cable lengths.

Is SDI or HDMI easier to pass through a slip ring?

SDI is generally easier because it is a single 75-ohm coaxial signal on one channel. HDMI uses several differential pairs plus control lines, so it needs more rings and matched geometry, and it is more sensitive to length. Many system designers convert HDMI to SDI or IP before the slip ring for this reason.
