Who Akribis Systems is

Akribis Systems is a Singapore-headquartered manufacturer of direct-drive precision motion products. Its catalogue is built around motors that drive the load without a screw, belt or gearbox in between: linear motors, direct drive rotary motors, frameless torque motors and voice coils, together with the modules and stages that turn those motors into complete axes. The company describes itself as a provider of direct-drive precision motion solutions and says it has multiple manufacturing facilities worldwide.

Engineers usually meet Akribis when they need very high positioning accuracy, fast settling or smooth low-speed motion, for example on semiconductor, electronics assembly, laser and inspection machines.

History and group structure

Akribis’s own history starts in Singapore in 2004. The company then added locations at a steady pace: Pathum Thani in Thailand (2006), Siheung in South Korea (2009), Shanghai (2010), Silicon Valley (2012), Boston (2015), Selangor in Malaysia (2016), Erlangen in Germany (2017), Kfar Saba in Israel (2018), Nantong in China (2019, with further expansion there and in Hangzhou in 2021) and Mumbai and Bangalore in India (2025).

The parent is Akribis Systems Pte Ltd in Singapore. The contact page lists operating companies including Akribis Systems (Shanghai) Co., Ltd, Akribis Systems (Nantong) Co., Ltd, Akribis Systems Sdn Bhd in Malaysia and Akribis Systems Korea Co., Ltd, as well as sales partners in Europe, North America and Asia. The company’s pages refer to a large patent portfolio and say it holds the top share of the direct drive market in China, citing the research firm MIR; it does not publish shareholder details or a headcount.

Product portfolio

Linear motors

Akribis offers both main linear motor architectures. Ironless (coreless) motors have no iron in the moving coil, so they have zero cogging and no magnetic attraction to the track, which gives very smooth motion and fast settling. The range includes the AUM U-channel ironless motor, the vacuum-compatible AWM and the ACR curved ironless motor for arc or full-circle motion on large radii.

Iron-core motors trade some smoothness for much higher force density. Here the range covers the compact AJM, the high-force AKM with optional water cooling, and the narrow, low-cogging AQM for long-stroke axes.

Direct drive rotary and frameless torque motors

Housed direct drive motors come with their own bearings and encoder. The iron-core ADR-A and ADR-B cover 110-360 mm frames, the AXD is a low-profile type with a large centre hole, and the AXD-ERA adds a contamination-resistant absolute encoder. For zero-cogging rotation, the ironless ACD and flat ACW are the options.

Where the motor must be built into the machine structure, Akribis supplies frameless rotor and stator kits: the low-voltage ADR-F for small joints and tables, and the high-voltage ADR-P with large through-bores. Our frameless motor sizing guide explains how to size this type for a robot joint.

Voice coils, modules and stages

Voice coil motors provide short, very fast, cog-free strokes for focusing, pick-and-place and force control. Akribis lists the cylindrical AVM and AVM-HF high-force types and the flat AVA. Above component level it builds dual-guide, crossed-roller, miniature, air bearing and picker modules, stacked, gantry and wafer stages, and custom motors and stages, and it sells drives, controllers and encoders to complete the axis.

Technologies Akribis is known for

The common thread is direct drive. Removing the transmission removes backlash, wear and compliance, so position is limited mainly by the encoder, the structure and the servo tuning. The trade-off is that the motor must produce the full load torque or force itself, and the machine must be stiff enough and the drive tuned well enough to use that bandwidth. For an engineer, the key choice in the Akribis range is ironless against iron-core: ironless for smoothness and settling, iron-core for force per unit size and cost per newton.

When asking for a quotation on a direct drive axis, give the moving mass, the move profile (stroke or angle, peak speed, acceleration and settling window), the required accuracy and repeatability, the available bus voltage, the environment (cleanroom class or vacuum, temperature, cooling) and whether the motor is to be housed or frameless. Those inputs decide the motor family and size far more reliably than a target peak force alone.

Industries served

Akribis lists semiconductors, electronics manufacturing, precision lasers, flat panel display, biomedical, high-end machine tools, renewable energy, lithium batteries, robotics and optical communications. See our semiconductor and electronics applications page for how direct drive axes are specified in that sector.

Global and UK presence

The contact page lists offices in Singapore, China, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Israel, India, the USA and Germany, plus sales partners in several other countries. The nearest Akribis office to the UK is in Erlangen, Germany.

In the UK, Akribis products are available through our supply network. Our engineers can help specify the motor, feedback and drive for a direct drive axis, and provide pricing, lead times, datasheets and CAD models through the enquiry form on this page.
