Start with motor and drive data
Ask for the manufacturer’s data for the exact winding. Distinguish phase current conventions and confirm the peak duration. Do not compare an RMS value directly with a peak amplitude or assume that the same nominal wattage means the same torque-speed capability.
Motor constants and current limits affect commissioning. Temperature sensing, Hall information and encoder signals may also be necessary for the drive’s intended control method. Any motor identification or setup procedure must follow the selected manufacturer’s instructions.
Check the feedback connection end to end
The encoder protocol, voltage and timing need to agree with the receiving drive. A connector shell or a broad description such as absolute encoder is insufficient. Confirm pin assignments, shielding, cable requirements and whether the device provides the commutation or multi-turn information the installation uses.
If a separate load encoder closes an outer loop, include that device in the review. Changing the motor encoder alone can leave the complete control arrangement unresolved. The encoder interface guide explains the common interface families.
Confirm controller behaviour
List the required operating modes and functions: coordinated movement, homing, electronic gearing, triggering or local programmes. Check the actual controller, drive, firmware and device-description combination. A network connection is not the same as a confirmed application implementation.
ADVANCED Motion Controls publishes third-party motor resources and notes that past combinations are not guarantees for every system. Treat compatibility lists as evidence to investigate, with the remaining model-specific checks documented.
Define what can change
A replacement project should distinguish fixed interfaces from preferences. If the motor, feedback, cables and controller must all stay, say so. If a wider package is acceptable, provide the application duty so the new combination can be assessed from the load backwards.
For a compatibility enquiry, send the completed checklist with the original codes, quantity and deadline. The responsible machine engineer should approve the exact configuration, commissioning plan and acceptance tests before the new axis is put into service.
Frequently asked questions
Is matching EtherCAT enough to choose another drive?
No. Check supported operating modes, synchronisation, controller integration, device descriptions and firmware as well as the motor, feedback and power interfaces.
