Who Pro-face is

Pro-face is a Japanese brand of human machine interfaces (HMIs): the touch screen operator panels that sit on the front of a machine or control cabinet and connect to PLCs, drives and motion controllers. The name combines “professional” and “interface”. The products are designed and sold by Schneider Electric Japan Holdings Ltd. under the brand Pro-face by Schneider Electric.

For machine builders, the appeal is a long-lived family with one screen design tool, GP-Pro EX, across most of the range, so projects can move between panel sizes and generations rather than being rebuilt from scratch.

History and ownership

Pro-face’s history page records the company’s development from a small Osaka electronics firm:

  • 1972: Digital Electronics Corporation is founded in Osaka to make electronic equipment.
  • 1983: it releases the DP Series, its first HMI.
  • 1989: the GP Series follows, which Pro-face describes as the first programmable graphic terminal.
  • 1996: Pro-face Europe is set up in Amsterdam, and the company develops what it describes as the first HMI with a built-in controller.
  • 2001: the LT Series HMI with controller is launched.
  • 2003: the ST Series compact HMI follows.
  • 2011: the GP4000 Series is launched, which Pro-face says uses up to 84 % less power.
  • 2013: cumulative HMI sales pass 3 million units and the LT4000M Series is launched.
  • 2014: the SP5000 Series launches and the head office moves to Kitahama, Osaka.
  • 2019: Pro-face marks 30 years of HMI with more than 5 million units sold.

Digital Electronics Corporation has been a Schneider Electric group company since 2002. On 1 September 2017 it was merged into Schneider Electric Japan Holdings Ltd., the surviving company, and the HMI brand became Pro-face by Schneider Electric.

HMI portfolio

Pro-face HMIs sit in our motion controllers family because they are the operator interface for motion and PLC systems. Our series pages summarise the published figures.

Standard and flagship HMIs

  • The GP4000 Series is the long-running standard range, from 3.5 to 12.1 inches, with analogue resistive touch, 24 V DC or 100–240 V AC supply on the larger models, and handheld (GP4000H) and rear-mount (GP4000R) variants. Pro-face has announced end-of-sale dates for several models, including some on 1 October 2027.
  • The ST6000 Series covers 4 to 15 inch widescreen and 5.7 and 10.4 inch 4:3 formats with up to two Ethernet ports. A certified 12.1 inch model carries ATEX, IECEx, UL Class I Division 2 and marine (DNV) approvals.
  • The SP5000 Series is the modular flagship: a display module from 7 to 19 inches combined with a Standard Box or a Windows Open Box, plus add-on CANopen or FLEX NETWORK master units.

Entry-level and hybrid HMIs

  • The ET6000 Series is the entry range, 7 to 15 inches widescreen, up to 1,366 × 768 resolution.
  • The LT4000M Series combines a 3.5 or 5.7 inch HMI with digital and analogue I/O and CANopen in a unit that fits a 22 mm push-button hole, which makes it a practical upgrade for small machines with a push-button panel.

Pro-face also makes industrial PCs (the PS6000 Series) and software: GP-Pro EX for screen design and BLUE for HMI and line-management applications.

Technologies and standards

The Pro-face range uses resistive touch for most standard panels, with 2-point matrix touch on some GP4000 models. Connection options across the families include RS-232C and RS-422/485 serial ports, Ethernet, USB and SD card. The ST6000 certified models show where Pro-face is often specified: hazardous locations and ships, where ATEX, IECEx, UL Class I Division 2 and classification society approvals matter. Pro-face cites software compatibility with GP-Pro EX as an easy migration route onto the newer ET6000 panels, which matters when a machine’s screens have years of development in them.

Industries served

Pro-face panels are general-purpose machine and process HMIs, used wherever an operator needs to set up, run and diagnose a machine connected to a PLC or motion controller. The certified ST6000 models, with ATEX, IECEx, UL Class I Division 2 and DNV approvals, take the range into hazardous-area and shipboard equipment, and the LT4000M suits small machines that need a screen and a little control in one unit.

Global and UK presence

Pro-face’s worldwide contact page lists regional offices by map and region menu. Its history records offices in Korea (1995), Europe (Amsterdam, 1996), China (2001), India (2007 and 2011), Singapore (2011) and Indonesia (2014). The pages we checked do not give a UK address, so UK buyers usually work through Pro-face Europe or Schneider Electric’s channels.

What to send when specifying a Pro-face HMI

Give the screen size and format, the PLC or motion controller it must talk to (make, model and protocol), the number of Ethernet and serial ports needed, supply voltage, front IP rating, temperature range, any hazardous-area or marine approval, and whether you are replacing an existing Pro-face model and want to reuse the project file.

Specify Motion is independent of Pro-face and Schneider Electric. Our engineers can help source Pro-face HMIs or propose equivalents; see find a replacement or the motion controllers hub.
