Figures are the highest published for each series and are not always measured the same way. A higher figure is not automatically a better choice: mounting, duty cycle, feedback, connectors and approvals matter too. An engineer will check the fit against your application before recommending anything.
Typical applications
What a hygienic stainless actuator is
A hygienic stainless actuator is a linear actuator designed for food, beverage, pharmaceutical and other washdown environments. The body is usually stainless steel with smooth, crevice-free surfaces, sloped geometry so water drains, sealed rod and shaft interfaces, and food-grade lubricants. Internally it is a rod actuator, typically driven by a ball or roller screw, with the motor either integrated or sealed alongside. Ingress protection is commonly rated to IP69K for high-pressure, high-temperature cleaning.
When engineers choose a hygienic stainless actuator
Choose a hygienic actuator when the machine is cleaned with pressure washers and caustic or acidic agents, or sits in a food contact or splash zone. Standard aluminium actuators corrode and trap residue. The trade-offs are cost, weight and the choice of motor and feedback, which also have to meet washdown requirements. In dry zones of the same plant, a standard actuator with a cover may be adequate and cheaper.
How to specify the Exlar GTF Series
Send these with your enquiry and an engineer can confirm the right GTF Series variant or an equivalent:
- Cleaning regime: pressure, temperature and chemicals
- Ingress protection required (IP code, often IP69K)
- Body material grade and surface finish
- Food-grade lubricant requirement
- Force, stroke and speed (N, mm, mm/s)
- Motor and cable sealing
- Zone: food contact, splash or non-food
Common mistakes to avoid
- Specifying a stainless actuator but a standard motor and connector
- Choosing IP67, which does not cover high-pressure hot washdown
- Ignoring chemical compatibility of seals with cleaning agents
- Leaving mounting brackets that create crevices and trap residue
Exlar GTF Series: frequently asked questions
Can you help replace Exlar GTF Series or source the original?
Send the full model code, quantity and required date. Our engineers can check original-part availability and assess suitable alternatives, including supply-network options where appropriate. We confirm compatibility and any changes needed before recommending a replacement.
What is the Exlar GTF Series?
Hygienic washdown version of the integrated servo roller-screw actuator, with stainless wetted parts and food-grade grease, aimed at food, packaging and pharmaceutical machines. Published series figures include force 30,784 N, continuous force 15,392 N, stroke 450 mm, linear speed 1,270 mm/s. It is made by Curtiss-Wright Actuation Group; Specify Motion can help source it or propose an equivalent.
Who makes the Exlar GTF Series?
The Exlar GTF Series is made by Exlar (Curtiss-Wright Actuation Group) and is listed here for engineers comparing options. Specify Motion is not affiliated with Curtiss-Wright Actuation Group; brand names are used only to identify the product.
What is the force of the Exlar GTF Series?
The published series maximum force is 30,784 N. Individual models and sizes in the GTF Series range vary, so check the exact variant against your duty cycle, mounting and environment, or ask our engineers to confirm the right size for you.
Is there an alternative to the Exlar GTF Series?
We can assess suitable replacement options. On published figures, Tolomatic RSA-HT (high thrust) and Motion Control Products BLM Built-in Linear Module are options to assess from our supply network. An engineer confirms the fit against your application before recommending anything.
What does IP69K mean for an actuator?
IP69K denotes protection against close-range, high-pressure, high-temperature water jets, typically used in food plant washdown. It is tested with hot water at high pressure from several angles. It goes beyond IP67 or IP68, which cover immersion rather than jets. Check that motor, cable and connectors share the rating.
Is stainless steel enough for a hygienic actuator?
Not on its own. Hygienic design also needs smooth surfaces, no crevices or exposed threads, drainage, sealed interfaces and lubricants approved for incidental food contact. A stainless actuator with hard-to-clean geometry can still harbour bacteria, so look for designs built to recognised hygienic design principles.
