Who Unitree is

Unitree Robotics is a Chinese robotics company based in Hangzhou, best known for its quadruped “robot dogs” such as the Go1 and Go2 and, more recently, humanoids such as the G1 and H1. The company says it develops its own motors, reducers, controllers, LiDAR and motion control software. That in-house motor work is why Unitree appears on Specify Motion: it sells several of its robot joint motors as stand-alone actuators, which robot builders, universities and start-ups use in their own legged robots, exoskeletons and manipulators. This profile concerns those joint motor products, not the complete robots.

History and ownership

Unitree’s timeline credits its founding in 2016 to Wang Xingxing, now CEO, after a test video of the XDog quadruped he had built during his master’s degree drew attention and angel investment. The main steps since then:

  • 2017: Laikago quadruped released; 2019: Aliengo industrial quadruped.
  • 2020: A1 launched at CES in Las Vegas.
  • 2021: Go1 released in June; A1 robots perform at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala.
  • 2023: Go2 (July), H1 humanoid (August) and B2 industrial quadruped (November).
  • 2024: G1 humanoid introduced in May.
  • 2025: R1 (July) and A2 (August) released, and the H2 humanoid unveiled in October.

Unitree reports more than 200 patent applications, with more than 180 granted. Its website footer names the legal entity Yushu Technology Co., Ltd. The pages we read do not set out shareholders or a headcount.

Joint motor portfolio

Each of Unitree’s stand-alone joint motors combines a motor, a reduction stage and an encoder in one unit, controlled over RS-485. Our series records give the published figures.

  • The GO-M8010-6 is the compact joint from the Go1: 6.33:1 reduction, 23.7 Nm maximum torque, 30 rad/s (about 286 rpm) at 24 V, 15-bit absolute encoder, RS-485 at 4 Mbps and about 530 g. Its published operating range, -5 to +40 °C, is narrow, so check it against your environment.
  • The A1 joint motor from the A1 quadruped gives 33.5 Nm maximum instantaneous torque, 21 rad/s joint speed and runs from 20 to 40 V, weighing 605 g.
  • The bionic joint motor IM6014 gives up to 34.4 Nm peak through roughly 12.66:1 reduction, runs from 24 to 75 V and has dual absolute encoders, on the rotor and on the output, plus RS-485 multidrop at up to 6 Mbps.
  • The B1-16 waterproof joint from the B1 industrial quadruped is sealed to IP68 and gives 140 Nm maximum instantaneous torque from a 36–64 V supply, weighing 1,740 g.

Reading the numbers

Unitree publishes maximum or instantaneous torque, not continuous rated torque, for most joints. For a production design, size the joint on the continuous torque it must hold (for example a leg supporting body weight) and its thermal limit, not on the peak figure. Ask for the continuous rating and a torque-speed curve at your supply voltage. Our servo vs stepper and harmonic vs planetary vs cycloidal guides explain the trade-offs.

Technologies

Where Unitree publishes a ratio it is low (about 6:1 to 13:1), which puts these joints in the quasi-direct-drive style: a large motor with a modest reduction keeps a joint back-drivable and better able to absorb impacts during walking and jumping. Control commands cover torque, position, velocity, stiffness and damping, and the B1-16 also feeds back acceleration and temperature, which supports the impedance control used in legged robots. All of the joints read here use RS-485 rather than EtherCAT or CAN, which matters if your controller expects an industrial fieldbus.

Two further checks matter for a production design. First, confirm the supply voltage range against your battery: a 24 V nominal pack sits within the GO-M8010-6 and IM6014 ranges, while the B1-16 needs 36–64 V. Second, check whether the output-side position is absolute after power-up; only the IM6014 lists encoders on both rotor and output, which avoids a homing move at start-up.

Industries served

Unitree lists robot joints and power components for robotics research, education, robot competitions and DIY projects as uses for its motors, and its complete robots have appeared at major public events such as the 2022 Winter Olympics opening ceremony. Its waterproof B1-16 targets industrial legged robots working outdoors. See robotics and cobots for how joint actuators are specified for production machines.

Global and UK presence

Unitree lists its Hangzhou headquarters, a Shenzhen office and an affiliated company in Shanghai, with department emails for sales, support, marketing and purchasing. It shows no overseas offices or distributors on its contact page, and there is no UK office. UK buyers should check CE/UKCA documentation, the continuous ratings and the support route for production volumes.

What to send when specifying a joint motor

Give continuous and peak joint torque, speed, duty cycle, supply voltage, the bus your controller uses, encoder needs (output-side absolute or not), mass and envelope, IP rating and temperature range.

Specify Motion is independent of Unitree. Our engineers can help source Unitree joint motors or propose equivalents from our supply network on published figures; see find a replacement or the servo and stepper motors hub.
