Who Spinea is

SPINEA, s.r.o. is a Slovak engineering company that makes the TwinSpin reducer: a compact cycloidal-type gear with zero backlash and built-in output bearings. TwinSpin sits in the same class of precision reducers as RV and other cycloidal gears. It is used where a robot joint, rotary table or positioner needs high torque, high tilting stiffness and accuracy in a short axial length.

Spinea’s company profile lists industrial robotics, automation, machine tools, camera and navigation equipment and medical systems among its markets, and names CERN’s particle accelerator among its applications. It is a member of the International Federation of Robotics, EUnited Robotics and VDMA, and joined the US Motion Control and Motor Association in 2018.

History and ownership

The TwinSpin reducer was developed between 1990 and 1994 by designers Bartolomej Janek and Tibor Fecko, to address shortcomings of the gears then used in robots. The company was established in 1994. It received its first European patent and showed TwinSpin at the Hannover fair in 1995, and launched the T series in 1997 from a new greenfield plant. Serial production and ISO 9001 certification followed in 2000.

The range grew steadily: the H series in 2001, the E series in 2003, RotoSpin in 2006, DriveSpin actuators in 2008, the M series in 2009 and the G series in 2014. A second plant opened in 2007. A new plant in Haniska, near Prešov, began operating in June 2019 and now houses the headquarters. In 2022 Spinea was acquired by The Timken Company, the US bearing and power transmission group that also owns Rollon.

TwinSpin reducers

All TwinSpin series share the same principle: a high reduction ratio in a single compact unit, with radial and axial bearings integrated so the load can mount straight onto the output flange or case. Spinea rates them for a nominal life of L10 = 6,000 hours and recommends intermittent duty (S3 to S8); continuous S1 operation should be discussed with the maker.

  • The TwinSpin T series is the original design, in nine sizes from TS 60 to TS 300. Rated torque runs from 37 to 2,940 Nm, acceleration torque up to 7,350 Nm and emergency-stop torque up to 14,700 Nm, with ratios of 33 to 191 and lost motion below 1 to 1.5 arcmin.
  • The TwinSpin E series adds threaded and through holes in the case. Seven sizes from TS 70 to TS 220 give 50 to 1,250 Nm rated torque and up to 3,125 Nm acceleration torque.
  • The TwinSpin H series has a hollow shaft for cables, hoses or shafts, with bores from 13 to 65 mm. It is fully sealed and rated up to 2,750 Nm.
  • The TwinSpin M series is the miniature TS 50: 0.47 kg, 18 Nm rated and 36 Nm acceleration torque.

Spinea quotes lost motion and hysteresis rather than a single backlash figure. When comparing it with strain-wave or planetary gears, compare like for like: lost motion, torsional stiffness and tilting stiffness all affect positioning accuracy under load. Our harmonic vs planetary vs cycloidal guide explains the trade-offs.

DriveSpin actuators

DriveSpin pairs a TwinSpin reducer with an AC servo motor in one housing. Voltage, brake, feedback and connections can be varied in many cases.

  • DriveSpin DS standard actuators come in eight sizes, DS 050 to DS 155, rated 18 to 460 Nm.
  • DriveSpin DSH hollow-shaft actuators come in ten sizes with bores of 8 to 40 mm and 18 to 420 Nm rated torque. The newer DSH 075 and DSH 095 offer a parking brake.

Modular (DSM) and flat (DSF) versions are also listed. Spinea publishes detailed figures in its catalogue and online configurator rather than on the series pages.

Other products

Spinea’s menu also covers MoveSpin rotary units, slew bearings and slew drives, harmonic gearing, double-enveloping worm gearing for servo and NEMA motors, solar tracking gearboxes and laboratory test services.

Industries served

Spinea lists robotics, AGV and AMR drives, automation, machine tools, medical equipment, and defence and security, along with navigation and camera positioning. Its profile names robot and machine builders such as KUKA, ABB, Comau, DMG Mori and Trumpf among its major customers.

Global and UK presence

Spinea’s production plants are in the Prešov area of Slovakia. It has a German subsidiary, SPINEA Deutschland GmbH in Stuttgart, and Cone Drive in Traverse City, Michigan, is its listed US representative. For the United Kingdom, its sales representative page lists a Spinea sales manager based in Slovakia rather than a UK distributor, so UK engineers buy directly from the factory. The general enquiry address is info@spinea.com.

Specify Motion and Spinea

Specify Motion is independent of Spinea and Timken, and is not affiliated with either. We can help source TwinSpin and DriveSpin products or propose precision gearboxes from our supply network that meet the same published torque, ratio and lost motion figures, confirmed by an engineer. Frequently asked questions

What is the Spinea website?

Spinea's website is spinea.com. It lists the TwinSpin reducer series and DriveSpin actuators with rating tables, and links to online configurators for TwinSpin, DriveSpin, slew drives and a competitor interchange tool. Catalogues and drawings are in the downloads section.

What is Spinea's email and phone number?

Spinea's contact page gives info@spinea.com as the general address and sales@spinea.com for sales. The only phone number listed on that page is +421 908 987 940, shown next to the logistics department.

Where is Spinea's headquarters?

SPINEA, s.r.o. is at Ku Magašu 702/3, 080 01 Haniska, in the District of Prešov, Slovakia. The headquarters and top management moved to this plant when it opened in June 2019.

Who owns Spinea?

Spinea was acquired by The Timken Company in 2022, according to its own history page. Timken also owns the Italian linear motion maker Rollon.

Does Spinea have a UK office?

No. Spinea's sales representative page lists a Slovakia-based Spinea sales contact for the United Kingdom, not a UK office or distributor. Its nearest subsidiary is SPINEA Deutschland GmbH in Stuttgart.

What does Spinea make?

Spinea makes TwinSpin high-precision cycloidal bearing reducers, which combine a two-stage reduction with integrated radial-axial output bearings, and DriveSpin actuators that add an AC servo motor. It also offers slewing bearings and drives, worm gearing and customised gears.
