Who SCHLEIFRING is

Schleifring GmbH is a German specialist in rotary transmission: electrical slip rings, contactless rotary joints and fibre optic rotary joints that carry power, signals and data across a rotating interface. History and ownership

SCHLEIFRING was established in 1974 in Türkenfeld, Bavaria, and moved to Fürstenfeldbruck the following year. It produced its first slip ring in 1977 and its thousandth in 1978; by 1990 it had built one hundred thousand.

The company’s milestones track the markets it serves. Its first radar slip ring came in 1988 and its first single-channel fibre optic rotary joints in 1991. In 1997 it developed contactless data transmission and set up a production site in Kaufbeuren, and in 1998 it began series production of CT slip rings, entering the medical equipment business. In 2000 it founded Schleifring North America and set up Schleifring Medical Systems as a joint venture with GE Medical. A first gantry system, for baggage scanners, followed in 2003, and series production of wind turbine slip rings in 2006.

Expansion continued with SCHLEIFRING China in 2010 (later moved to Tianjin), 3D-printed parts production from 2016, the MIA slip ring configurator in 2017, a new R&D building in Fürstenfeldbruck and series production of gantries in 2019, and a new production building in Kaufbeuren in 2024. A further production building in Fürstenfeldbruck is planned for 2027.

Slip rings

The industrial slip ring range is a catalogue system of modules combining power rings with signal, Ethernet, CC-Link and optional media channels, sold through the SCHLEIFRING online shop. Rotary joints and contactless transmission

Fibre optic rotary joints come in single-mode and multi-mode versions, from catalogue single-channel units to custom multi-channel designs. Media rotary joints pass air, vacuum or hydraulic fluid and can be combined with a slip ring. GigaCAP is SCHLEIFRING’s capacitive contactless data link, used for very high-rate image data in CT gantries and as a wear-free Ethernet path in wind pitch rings.

Technologies and standards

SCHLEIFRING’s distinctive technology is contactless transmission: capacitive data links remove the wear and noise of sliding contacts for high-rate data, while conventional brush-and-ring tracks still carry power. Fibre optic rotary joints carry optical signals across the rotation without conversion. For engineers, the practical consequence is that one rotary assembly can combine power rings, contactless data, fibre and media channels, which is why so many of its products are customer-specific.
