Who Parker Hannifin is

Parker-Hannifin Corporation is an American motion and control technology group headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. Most engineers associate the name with hydraulics, pneumatics, fittings, seals and filtration. Parker also has a substantial electromechanical business. In Europe, its Electric Motion and Pneumatic Division in Offenburg, Germany, makes electric cylinders, rodless actuators, servo motors, servo drives and AC drives.

Parker’s 2023 fact sheet gives about 62,500 employees, fiscal 2023 sales of $19.1 billion, operations in 44 countries and 335 manufacturing plants. It lists the core technologies as electromechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic, fluid and gas handling, filtration, engineered materials, climate control and process control. Its product groups are Aerospace, Engineered Materials, Filtration, Fluid Connectors and Motion Systems.

History and ownership

Parker’s centenary release dates the company to 13 March 1917. That is when engineer Arthur L. “Art” Parker founded the Parker Appliance Company in Cleveland. Working with business partner Carl Klamm from a small loft, the company made pneumatic brake systems and leak-free fittings. Parker’s first patent covered a hydraulic device to regulate the speed of electric generators.

By its centenary in 2017, Parker reported more than 8,000 patents and more than 55,000 team members. It also reported more than 300 facilities in over 50 countries and more than 13,000 independent distribution partners. Parker-Hannifin Corporation is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker PH and is not part of another group.

Electromechanical portfolio

Electric cylinders

The ETH electro thrust cylinder is Parker’s high-force rod actuator. Five sizes, from ETH032 to ETH125, use ball screws with 5 to 20 mm leads. They reach up to about 114,000 N on the ETH125, up to 1.3 m/s on the ETH050 and up to 2,000 mm stroke. The flange follows the ISO 15552 pneumatic cylinder pattern, and protection options run from IP54 to IP65, with ATEX versions for some sizes. Parker quotes repeatability of ±0.03 mm with an inline motor and offers an integrated force sensor.

The ETH catalogue adds details that help with sizing. Acceleration reaches 15 m/s², efficiency up to 90% with an inline motor, and the operating temperature range is -10 to +70 °C for an ambient of -10 to +40 °C. The ISO 15552 flange means an ETH can often bolt into a frame designed for a pneumatic cylinder. Always check rod side load and the motor envelope, though, as an electric cylinder is longer than the pneumatic cylinder it replaces.

Rodless actuators

The HLR is a belt-driven, high-load rodless actuator in two sizes. It reaches up to 5 m/s and 3,500 mm stroke and carries up to 3,847 N. The OSP-E family shares its profile with Parker’s OSP pneumatic rodless cylinders. It comes in belt versions (up to 5 m/s, about 5,675 mm stroke and 15,000 N load on the heavy-duty BHD) and ball or trapezoidal screw versions.

Servo motors and drives

The SMH servo motors are low-inertia brushless motors in seven flange sizes from 40 to 170 mm. They cover about 0.16 to 53 Nm and up to 7,500 rpm, with resolver, Hiperface, Hiperface DSL or EnDat feedback. The MH motors extend the range to 285 Nm in 145 to 265 mm flanges. For hazardous areas, Parker lists EX motors for Zone 1 and EY motors for Zone 2. NK frameless kits serve direct-drive designs.

The PSD1 servo drive comes as a standalone unit (2 to 7.5 A, 230 V AC) and as a multi-axis system on a 325 to 680 V DC bus (5 to 30 A per axis, up to about 18 kW). The basic version uses EtherCAT. Programmable and multi-axis versions add CANopen, PROFINET and EtherNet/IP. Safety over EtherCAT (FSoE) is an option. For speed control of standard motors, Parker also offers the AC10 to AC30 drive families up to 450 kW.

Technologies and standards

Parker’s electric range is often specified as a hydraulic or pneumatic replacement, so the ETH borrows ISO 15552 dimensions and offers ATEX variants. If you are converting a hydraulic axis, our hydraulic-to-electric guide sets out what to check. Our linear actuator sizing guide covers load, life and duty for screw-driven cylinders. Where an axis sits in an ATEX zone, the EX and EY motor ranges and the ATEX versions of the ETH are the parts of the range to look at.

Industries served

Parker serves industrial and aerospace markets across its divisions. Its electromechanical products are used in packaging, handling, metal forming, test rigs and process equipment, as well as for replacing pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders on existing machines.
