Who Lenze is
Lenze is a German drive and automation company that supplies machine builders with the electrical and mechanical parts of a motion axis: inverters and servo inverters, motors, gearboxes and the controllers and software that coordinate them. Its own description is of a global automation company for mechanical engineering, present in more than 45 countries with more than 3,600 employees and research and development at eight international facilities.
For motion engineers, Lenze is best known for cabinet servo inverters, synchronous servo motors designed for direct gearbox mounting, and a controller range that lets the same engineering tools cover drives and machine control. The legal entity is Lenze SE, with its street address in Aerzen, near Hameln in Lower Saxony.
History and ownership
The company traces its origin to 1947, when Hans Lenze took over Stahlkontor GmbH in Hameln from the Mannesmann Group. Its first own product, the Alquist winder three-phase AC motor, followed in 1950, and a machine company, Hans Lenze KG, was founded in Extertal in 1957. A new plant in Groß Berkel expanded production in 1962.
Electronics arrived in 1977 with Lenze’s first frequency inverter for three-phase motors. The 9300 servo inverter of 1996 is the point at which the company says drive-based automation became possible, and in 1998 it positioned itself as an integrated automation provider under the slogan “Drive meets Automation”. The 1999 purchase of US manufacturer AC Tech gave Lenze its first production and logistics site outside Germany.
Later milestones include the software company encoway, founded in Bremen in 2000, the L-force drive and automation platform in 2004, a Shanghai company in 2007, the first Indian manufacturing site in 2013, and a majority stake in cloud and IoT provider logicline in 2017. Lenze AG became a European company, Lenze SE, in 2009. The imprint lists the company at the Hannover district court under HRB 204803.
Product portfolio
Servo inverters
Lenze lists four current cabinet servo inverter series: the i700, i750, i950 and the 9400 HighLine. On our site we cover the i950 cabinet servo inverter, which runs from 0.37 kW on 230, 400 or 480 V mains, offers EtherCAT, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, PROFIBUS and CANopen, and can carry integrated safety up to SIL 3 / PL e. One-cable feedback over HIPERFACE DSL or EnDat 3 is supported. The i700 servo inverter is the multi-axis option: EtherCAT axis modules from 0.75 to 15 kW single-axis, or 0.75 to 7.5 kW per axis in double-axis modules from 50 mm wide, all fed from a common DC bus.
Servo motors
The synchronous range comprises the m850 servo motors, from 0.11 to 9.2 kW, and the MCS servo motors, from 0.25 to 15.8 kW with resolver, incremental, absolute or one-cable digital encoders. Both are designed to mount directly on Lenze gearboxes. Asynchronous servo motors (MCA, MQA and SDSGA) cover applications where an induction motor suits the duty better.
Gearboxes
For servo axes, Lenze points engineers to its planetary and bevel planetary gearboxes. The g7x0-P planetary gearboxes cover 4 to 800 Nm with flange, solid or hollow output and lifetime lubrication in any mounting position. Helical, shaft-mounted helical and bevel gearboxes (g500 series) serve conveyor and general drive duty. Our gearbox hub and the guide to harmonic vs planetary vs cycloidal gearing explain how to choose.
Controllers
The controller family includes the c430, c520 and c550, plus the c250-S safety controller. The c550 controller is the high-end model, with an Intel Core i7 processor, real-time Linux, EtherCAT master and slave and a PROFINET device interface, rated to 60 °C ambient without a battery. Lenze positions it for printing machines with many print units and picker lines with several robots.
Technologies and standards
Lenze’s current servo products lean on EtherCAT as the axis bus, with multi-protocol fieldbus options on the i950. It supports one-cable motor connection (OCT) using HIPERFACE DSL and EnDat 3, which removes the separate feedback cable. Drive-integrated safety to SIL 3 / PL e Cat. 4, with FSoE and PROFIsafe, is available on the i950, and the drive meets the ecodesign requirements of EN IEC 61800-9-2. The i950 also has preconfigured technology applications such as table positioning, electronic gearbox and winder, set up by parameters rather than programming.
Industries served
Lenze’s own product pages name positioning, robotics, packaging and handling for its servo motors, winders and electronic gearing for its servo inverters, and printing machines and robot picker lines for its top controller. More generally, it addresses machine builders in mechanical engineering, which takes in packaging, materials handling and process machinery. Our packaging and food and robotics pages cover the motion requirements of those sectors.
Global and UK presence
Lenze reports a presence in more than 45 countries. In the UK it has its own company, Lenze Ltd, at 6 Abbey Court, Fraser Road, Priory Business Park, Bedford MK44 3WH, telephone +44 1234 753200, with separate addresses for sales, service and orders. UK engineers can therefore buy direct from the Bedford company and get local service and training, which the UK pages of lenze.com list.
Sourcing Lenze parts through Specify Motion
Specify Motion is independent of Lenze and is not affiliated with it. We can help you source Lenze servo inverters, motors and gearboxes for an existing machine, or propose equivalent parts from our supply network on published figures where a second source makes sense. The find a replacement form is the quickest way to send us a part number or nameplate.
