Who Copley Controls is

Copley Controls is a US maker of servo drives for equipment manufacturers. It engineers precision motion products and rugged servo drives for OEMs in semiconductor, robotics, aerospace, medical and industrial markets, and states that it has been in the business for more than 40 years. Its drives run brushless, brushed, linear and voice coil motors and are sold in three physical formats: panel-mounted drives, PCB-mounted modules and ruggedised drives for harsh environments.

The range is shaped around OEM integration: modules that mount on the equipment maker’s own circuit board, DC-powered drives that suit battery-powered robots and mobile machines, and drives built to military shock and vibration standards, all sharing the same network and feedback options.

History and ownership

Copley Controls Corporation was founded in 1984 in Canton, Massachusetts. Alongside motion control it became a supplier of gradient amplifiers for MRI scanners, which led to its acquisition by Analogic Corporation. Analogic announced the deal on 6 March 2008, describing Copley as having about 250 employees across the United States, Europe and Asia and 2006 revenue of USD 73.6 million. The acquisition completed on 15 April 2008 for USD 76.875 million in cash at closing, and Copley became a wholly owned Analogic subsidiary.

Copley still describes itself as part of Analogic, a medical and security imaging technology company headquartered north of Boston.

Product portfolio

AC-line panel drives

The Xenus PLUS single-axis drives run from 100–240 V AC in three ratings: 6 A continuous / 18 A peak, 12 / 36 A and 20 / 40 A. They come as XEL (EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP), XPL (CANopen, DeviceNet, SAE J1939) or XML (MACRO), and accept BiSS-C, SSI, Absolute A, EnDat, incremental, Hall and analogue sin/cos feedback, with resolver versions on XEL and XPL. The Xenus PLUS dual-axis XE2, XP2 and XM2 drives are rated 10 A continuous and 20 A peak, with STO to SIL 3, Category 3, PL d.

DC-powered panel drives

The Accelnet PLUS Panel BEL, BPL and BML drives run from 14–90 V DC in 3 / 6 A, 7 / 14 A and 15 / 30 A ratings, with the same network choices, feedback options and STO rating as the Xenus PLUS dual-axis drive.

PCB-mounted modules

The Accelnet PLUS Micro Module AEV (EtherCAT) and APV (CANopen) drives measure 64 x 41 mm and cover 9–90 V DC and 20–180 V DC, up to 25 A continuous and 50 A peak. The Argus PLUS GEM and GPM modules deliver 30 A continuous and 60 A peak from 9–55 V DC or 14–90 V DC in a 78.7 x 60.1 x 23.4 mm package with STO. Nano PLUS modules cover the miniature end, M-Series modules handle three or four axes, and Stepnet PLUS covers stepper motors.

Ruggedised drives

For defence, aerospace and vehicle-mounted equipment, Copley builds ruggedised drives to MIL-STD-810. The Xenus R10 is the AC-line example: 100–240 V AC, 6 to 20 A continuous and 18 to 40 A peak, up to 6 kW, with CANopen and RS-232 and an RS-422 factory option. A ruggedised Argus PLUS Module R71 is also listed.

Our servo drives hub explains how to size continuous and peak current, and our defence and security page covers environmental qualification.

Technologies and standards

Copley’s PLUS generation shares one feedback and network architecture across AC panel, DC panel and module drives, so an OEM can move between formats without changing the motion software. Network options span EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, CANopen, DeviceNet, SAE J1939 and MACRO. Safe Torque Off on the PLUS drives is rated SIL 3, Category 3, PL d. Downloads include CE certificates, RoHS and REACH statements and MTBF reports for the main drives.

When choosing between formats, start with the supply. A machine with a mains-fed cabinet suits Xenus PLUS; a 24–90 V DC bus, common on AGVs, cobots and battery systems, points to Accelnet PLUS or Argus PLUS. Then decide whether the drive should sit in a panel or on your own board: modules save space and wiring but move thermal design, connector choice and EMC layout onto the OEM. Finally, confirm the feedback type and network the controller expects before fixing a part number.

Industries served

Copley names semiconductor, robotics, aerospace, medical and industrial markets, and its site includes industry pages for mobile robotics and ruggedised applications. Its history in MRI gradient amplifiers explains its strong medical connections. See our robotics and cobots and medical and laboratory pages for typical requirements.

Global and UK presence

Copley operates from Canton, Massachusetts. Its contact page lists no UK or European office; instead its distributor locator covers the United Kingdom and most European countries. UK engineers therefore buy through a listed distributor.

Sourcing Copley parts through Specify Motion

Specify Motion is independent of Copley Controls and is not affiliated with it. We can help you source Copley servo drives for an existing machine, or propose equivalent drives from our supply network on published figures where a second source makes sense. The find a replacement form is the quickest way to send us a part number or nameplate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Copley Controls website?

The website is copleycontrols.com. It lists servo drives by format, as panel drives, module drives and ruggedised drives, plus software, accessories, engineering calculators, a downloads library with datasheets and manuals, and a distributor locator with entries for the UK and most European countries.

What is the Copley Controls phone number?

Copley's contact page lists +1 781 828 8090 for its Canton, Massachusetts head office and sales@copleycontrols.com for sales enquiries. The page does not publish a separate fax or general email, and it points customers outside the US to the distributor locator for local support.

Where is Copley Controls located?

Copley Controls is at 20 Dan Road, Canton, MA 02021, USA, south of Boston. Analogic's acquisition announcement in 2008 described Copley as headquartered in Canton, with offices and local technical support in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Who owns Copley Controls?

Copley Controls is part of Analogic Corporation, a medical and security imaging technology company headquartered north of Boston. Analogic announced the purchase in March 2008 and completed it in April 2008, paying USD 76.875 million in cash at closing, and Copley became a wholly owned subsidiary.

Can I buy Copley drives in the UK?

Copley does not list a UK office on its contact page. Its distributor locator includes the United Kingdom as a country option, so UK engineers buy through a listed distributor, or contact the Canton head office by phone or the sales email for guidance on the nearest partner.
