Buy around the machine’s required movement
A complete axis starts with the mechanism: a belt, screw, rack, rotary table or direct drive. State the payload or inertia, travel, speed, acceleration, stopping conditions and cycle rate. An isolated motor power rating cannot describe all of these demands.
A package enquiry can cover the motor and drive alone, or include gearing, actuator mechanics, feedback and the controller interface. It is particularly useful when an OEM wants one technical discussion for several interdependent components. Motion Control Products publishes configurable products and integrated motion packages; the appropriate combination is still selected for the individual application.
Agree what complete means
| Package item | Detail that affects the selection |
|---|---|
| Motor | Torque-speed curve, thermal rating, winding, brake and mounting |
| Drive | Supply, continuous and peak current, feedback, control mode and network |
| Gearbox or mechanism | Ratio, load capacity, backlash, stiffness, inertia and lifetime |
| Cables and connectors | Exact pinout, length, flexing duty, shielding and brake connections |
| Controller interface | Network functions, configuration files and integration responsibilities |
Power supplies, braking resistors, couplings, motor adapters and limit switches may sit outside the quoted scope unless identified. Ask for a component list so purchasing can compare complete proposals rather than a motor-only price against a system price.
Compare system choices, not headline ratings
A gearbox can reduce reflected load inertia but also introduces backlash, compliance and its own inertia. Direct drive removes the transmission but can increase motor size, current and thermal demands. Integrated motors reduce separate equipment, while a panel-mounted drive may suit a different servicing or environmental strategy.
Our gearbox calculator illustrates ratio effects; it does not replace checks against the gearbox’s mechanical ratings. The existing servo selection guide explains continuous and peak duty.
Define the supply and support boundaries
Tell us whether you need a quotation for loose components, an agreed motor-drive pairing or a wider supply package. Software development, panel building, assembly and commissioning should be requested explicitly. They are project-specific capabilities and are not included simply because several parts appear on one quotation.
For repeat builds, include annual quantities, target first-build date and any preferred manufacturers. The enquiry can then consider technical suitability alongside lead time, revision control and future availability. Engineering approval of the selected configuration remains necessary before the machine is released.
Turn the requirement into an enquiry
Send the application, quantities and deadline, plus any existing model codes. We can discuss the original part, alternatives or a matched package. Compatibility, availability and supply arrangements are confirmed for the specific enquiry.
