Figures are the highest published for each series and are not always measured the same way. A higher figure is not automatically a better choice: mounting, duty cycle, feedback, connectors and approvals matter too. An engineer will check the fit against your application before recommending anything.

What a spiral bevel gearbox is

A spiral bevel gearbox turns the drive through 90 degrees using bevel gears with curved, spiral teeth. Curved teeth engage gradually, giving smoother, quieter running and higher load capacity than straight bevels. In servo applications, a spiral bevel stage is often combined with a planetary stage to produce a right-angle precision gearbox. Efficiency is typically high, close to that of a planetary, which makes spiral bevel units preferable to worm gears where efficiency and back-drivability matter.

When engineers choose a spiral bevel gearbox

Choose a spiral bevel gearbox when the motor must sit at right angles to the output to save space, such as on gantries, conveyors and robot arms. It gives efficient, precise right-angle transmission. The trade-offs are cost and limited single-stage ratio compared with worm gears, which reach high ratios in one stage. For self-locking or very high ratios at low cost, a worm gear may suit better, but at lower efficiency.

How to specify the Nidec ABLE EVS

Send these with your enquiry and an engineer can confirm the right ABLE EVS variant or an equivalent:

  • Ratio and output speed (:1, rpm)
  • Output torque, nominal and peak (Nm)
  • Backlash (arcmin)
  • Input speed limit (rpm)
  • Output shaft or hollow bore
  • Motor interface
  • Radial and axial load (N)

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming right-angle units match inline torque ratings
  • Ignoring noise at high speed
  • Not checking the mounting orientation for lubrication
  • Overloading the output bearing with side loads

Nidec ABLE EVS: frequently asked questions

What is the Nidec ABLE EVS?

Right-angle (orthogonal axis) servo reducer in frame sizes 060 to 240, ratios 3 to 100 and allowable torque 12 to 1,920 Nm. Published series figures include ratio 3:1, ratio 100:1. It is made by NIDEC CORPORATION; Specify Motion can help source it or propose an equivalent.

Who makes the Nidec ABLE EVS?

The Nidec ABLE EVS is made by Nidec (NIDEC CORPORATION) and is listed here for engineers comparing options. Specify Motion is not affiliated with NIDEC CORPORATION; brand names are used only to identify the product.

What is the ratio of the Nidec ABLE EVS?

The published series minimum ratio is 3:1. Individual models and sizes in the ABLE EVS range vary, so check the exact variant against your duty cycle, mounting and environment, or ask our engineers to confirm the right size for you.

Is there an alternative to the Nidec ABLE EVS?

Yes. On published figures, Wanshsin WSHR and Wanshsin WTHR are the closest match from our supply network. An engineer confirms the fit against your application before recommending anything.

Spiral bevel or worm gearbox for a right-angle drive?

Spiral bevel gears are more efficient, run cooler and back-drive freely, which suits servo axes and dynamic motion. Worm gears offer high ratios in one stage and may resist back-driving, but efficiency falls at high ratios. Choose spiral bevel for servo performance, worm for simple low-cost holding.

Is a right-angle gearbox less precise than an inline one?

Not necessarily, but the added bevel stage typically adds a little backlash and reduces stiffness. Precision right-angle planetaries combine a spiral bevel input stage with a planetary output and publish backlash figures. Compare the right-angle unit's figures directly with the inline version.
