Who Feetech is

Feetech is a Shenzhen manufacturer of servos: compact units that integrate a motor, gearbox, position sensor and control electronics in one housing. It started in radio-controlled models but now sells heavily into robotics, with serial-bus “smart” servos that can be daisy-chained on one cable and report position, speed, load and temperature. Its own application list starts with education, desktop and service robots.

For an OEM engineer, Feetech sits at the low-cost, high-volume end of the actuator market, well below industrial servo motors in power and life but far above them in integration per pound spent.

History and ownership

The company is Shenzhen Feetech RC Model Co., Ltd., founded in 2011. Its profile says it designs and manufactures in-house, covering requirement analysis, design, testing, moulding, production and shipping. Its quality system is certified to ISO 9001:2015 and its products carry CE and RoHS marks. Feetech says it ships millions of servos a year to more than 50 countries. The website does not name shareholders or a parent company.

Product portfolio

Feetech publishes stall torque in kg·cm. We convert to Nm below (1 kg·cm ≈ 0.098 Nm). Stall torque is the torque at zero speed, so the usable running torque is much lower; as a rule of thumb, size for no more than about a third of stall torque in continuous duty.

TTL serial-bus servos

  • The STS series uses 360° magnetic encoders with 4,096 steps per turn. Models run from the 6 kg·cm (0.59 Nm) STS3045M at 6 V to the 200 kg·cm (19.6 Nm) brushless ST-3200 at 12 V. The ST-3025BL reaches 170 rpm at 12 V.
  • The SCS series covers 6 to 8.4 V supplies from 4.5 to 40 kg·cm (0.44 to 3.9 Nm), including double-shaft versions for robot joints.
  • The HLS series adds constant-force (force-control) operation using coreless motors, from 14.2 to 60 kg·cm (1.4 to 5.9 Nm). It is aimed at grippers and dexterous robot hands.

RS485 and CAN servos

  • The SMS series runs on RS485 at 12 or 24 V, up to 260 kg·cm (25.5 Nm) for the SM-260B at 24 V. Modbus-RTU versions let a PLC talk to the servo directly.
  • The FU series is a CAN-bus brushless servo with titanium gears; the FU-8830 gives 34.5 kg·cm (3.4 Nm) at 7.4 V.

Feetech also sells PWM servos, logistics shuttle-car servos, brushless and coreless industrial servos, wheel modules and debugging boards.

Technologies

  • Serial bus. TTL half-duplex buses are simple but short-range and noise-sensitive. RS485 and CAN are differential and suit longer cables and electrically noisy machines.
  • Magnetic encoders. STS and many HLS servos use 12-bit magnetic sensing (4,096 steps per turn), which allows full 360° rotation and multi-turn modes.
  • Force control. HLS servos regulate output torque, which helps a gripper hold a part without crushing it.

Industries served

Feetech’s profile lists RC models, educational, desktop and service robots, logistics systems (shuttle cars, sorting lines, smart warehouses), smart-home devices such as locks and switches, CCTV, agriculture and healthcare equipment.

Worked example: sizing a shoulder joint

A small arm lifts 0.5 kg at 0.3 m from the shoulder. The static torque is 0.5 × 9.81 × 0.3 ≈ 1.5 Nm, before the arm’s own weight. Allowing three times that for stall margin gives 4.5 Nm, so a 50 kg·cm (4.9 Nm) STS3250 is the smallest sensible choice, and a 12 V supply keeps current down. For production machines with long duty cycles, compare this against a geared servo motor with published continuous ratings.

Global and UK presence

Feetech lists only its Shenzhen head office. It names no overseas subsidiaries or UK distributors, and its servos reach UK buyers mainly through robotics and RC resellers. If you plan production volumes, ask about English documentation, firmware version control, lifetime data and lead times before committing.

Things to check before designing in a hobby-derived servo

  • Duty and life. Stall torque and no-load speed are published, but continuous ratings and rated life are not, so test the servo at your real duty cycle and temperature.
  • Supply sag. Several servos stalling together can draw large currents; size the supply and wiring for the worst case.
  • Bus timing. Daisy-chained servos share bandwidth, so check the update rate you can achieve for the number of joints on one bus.

What to send when specifying a smart servo

Send the continuous and peak torque at the output, speed, supply voltage, bus type and cable length, rotation range, the duty cycle and the expected life in hours.
