Who Pepperl+Fuchs is
Pepperl+Fuchs SE is a German manufacturer of industrial sensors and explosion-protection technology, based in Mannheim. It is best known for two things: the inductive proximity switch, which it has made since 1958, and intrinsic safety equipment for hazardous areas in the process industries. Rotary encoders are a smaller but well-established part of the business, sold within its industrial sensors range alongside photoelectric, ultrasonic, safety and identification sensors.
The company reports 6,280 employees and sales of €830 million in 2025. It groups its offer into industrial sensors, industrial communication and interfaces, enterprise mobility, and hazardous area products and solutions.
History and ownership
Pepperl+Fuchs’ own history page traces the company from a radio repair shop to a global sensor group:
- 1945: radio technician Walter Pepperl and banker Ludwig Fuchs found the business in Mannheim-Sandhofen, repairing radios and making transformers.
- 1958: the first proximity switch is developed.
- 1973: the first foreign sales company is founded, in England.
- 1979: the first production site outside Europe opens in Singapore.
- 1991: separate Factory Automation and Process Automation divisions are set up.
- 1996: the acquisition of Hohner in Tuttlingen adds rotary encoders to the range.
- 2000 to 2017: a series of acquisitions, among them Visolux, the Honeywell Microswitch proximity and photoelectric business, Elcon Instruments, Cooper Crouse-Hinds’ intrinsically safe instrumentation division, the Siemens proximity sensor business in 2010 and ecom instruments in 2017.
- 2019 and 2020: the legal form changes to an AG and then to a European company (SE).
Ownership has stayed with the founding families. Michael Fuchs, son of Ludwig Fuchs, and Claus Michael, son-in-law of Walter Pepperl, took over in 1988, and in 2015 leadership passed to Monika Müller-Michael and Michael Fuchs Jr. The company’s legal notice lists its executive board, chaired by Dr. Wilhelm Nehring.
Encoder portfolio
Pepperl+Fuchs offers absolute, incremental and cable-pull rotary encoders. Our series pages summarise the published figures.
Magnetic absolute encoders
- The ENA58IL is a 58 mm magnetic absolute encoder that combines a Hall sensor with a Wiegand sensor, giving up to 16-bit resolution and accuracy better than 0.1° without a battery or gears for multi-turn.
- The ENA36IL is a compact 36 mm version with 16-bit single-turn and 16-bit multi-turn resolution, a choice of IO-Link, CANopen, J1939, SSI or analogue output and up to 12,000 rpm. Its sister ENA36HD is sealed to IP69K.
- The ENA42HD is a heavy-duty 42 mm encoder, IP68 and IP69K, aimed at mobile machinery and wash-down duty.
The company’s magnetic encoder brochure gives up to 16-bit single-turn and 39-bit multi-turn resolution for the magnetic range as a whole, and -40 to +85 °C operation.
Incremental encoders
- The ENI58IL is a general-purpose 58 mm incremental encoder with 25 to 5,000 pulses per revolution, push-pull or RS-422 output up to 400 kHz and a 4.75–30 V DC supply.
- The ENI58PL is the programmable version, with up to 16,384 pulses, HTL or TTL output selected by the user and IO-Link for configuration. One programmable part can stand in for many fixed-resolution encoders in a spares store.
Hazardous-area encoders
Hazardous areas are where Pepperl+Fuchs differs most from other encoder makers. The AVM78E and CVM78E are 78 mm flameproof absolute encoders approved for gas Zones 1 and 2, dust Zones 21 and 22 and mining (Ex I M2), with 16-bit single-turn and 14-bit multi-turn resolution. The RVI70E is a flameproof incremental encoder with up to 5,000 pulses.
Cable-pull encoders
The ECN cable-pull (draw-wire) encoders measure linear position up to 60 m, using an incremental or absolute encoder on the drum.
Technologies and standards
Pepperl+Fuchs’ encoder range leans towards magnetic sensing with Wiegand multi-turn counting, which suits dirt, vibration and mobile equipment. Interfaces cover SSI, CANopen, J1939, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, AS-Interface, IO-Link and analogue, depending on the series. Its long experience with explosion protection (ATEX, IECEx and national approvals) shows in the flameproof encoders. For choosing between feedback types, see our absolute vs incremental encoders guide.
Industries served
Pepperl+Fuchs has worked in both factory automation and process automation since it set up separate divisions in 1991, and its hazardous-area products serve process plant where flammable gas or dust is present. The encoder documents point to mobile equipment, machine building and hazardous-area duty such as oil and gas and mining; typical encoder positions are motor and conveyor feedback, mobile hydraulics, agricultural machinery and plant in Ex zones.
Global and UK presence
The company says it has more than 80 subsidiaries. In the UK it trades as Pepperl+Fuchs GB Ltd., 77 Ripponden Road, Oldham OL1 4EL, phone +44 161 633 6431, email sales@gb.pepperl-fuchs.com. UK engineers can buy directly from the Oldham company or through its distributors.
What to send when specifying a Pepperl+Fuchs encoder
State the housing size and flange, solid or hollow shaft and diameter, single-turn or multi-turn, resolution or pulse count, interface, supply voltage, IP rating, temperature range and connection. For a hazardous area, give the zone, gas or dust group and temperature class.
Specify Motion is independent of Pepperl+Fuchs. Our engineers can help source its encoders or propose equivalents on published figures; see find a replacement or the encoders hub.
