Who ABB is, and where servo fits

ABB is a Swiss-headquartered electrification and automation group. Its Motion business area covers motors, generators and drives, and inside that sits a compact servo range: servo drives and matching servo motors that ABB presents together as a motion package for machine automation. This page covers only that servo and motion part of ABB, not its wider power, electrification or process businesses.

For a machine builder, ABB’s servo offer is deliberately focused. Rather than a long list of drive families, there are two current servo drives, the MicroFlex e190 and the MotiFlex e180, which share firmware, the Mint programming language and the same multi-Ethernet interface. They are partnered with the eSM, DSM, HDS and HY motor ranges, and sized with ABB’s Servosize tool.

History and ownership

ABB states that the company took its current form in 1988, but that its roots run back more than 140 years to the late nineteenth century. The legal entity named on its provider information page is ABB Asea Brown Boveri Ltd, registered in Zurich, with the group headquarters at Affolternstrasse 44 in Oerlikon. ABB reports around 110,000 employees worldwide.

The group has reshaped its portfolio in recent years. ABB’s UK contact directory notes that the robotics business has been divested and that robotics enquiries now go to a separate ABB Robotics contact route.

Servo drives

MicroFlex e190

The MicroFlex e190 is the compact drive for single- or three-phase 200–240 V AC supplies (or 270–340 V DC). The catalogue lists three frame ratings of 3, 6 and 9 A continuous in 200% overload mode, giving 6, 12 and 18 A peak, or a 300% mode with up to 22.5 A peak for three seconds. ABB’s 200 V motor packages for it run from 0.05 to 2 kW. It accepts SSI, 1 Vpp sin/cos, BiSS-B, EnDat 2.1/2.2, SmartAbs, HIPERFACE, resolver and incremental feedback on dual encoder inputs, and Safe Torque Off to SIL 3 / PL e is standard.

MotiFlex e180

The MotiFlex e180 covers higher powers on three-phase 200–480 V AC mains (or 270–650 V DC). Rated current runs from 3 to 55 A in 200% mode, with peaks up to 110 A, or up to 120 A in the 300% mode. It adds HIPERFACE DSL single-cable feedback on units of 46 A and below, and ABB’s 400 V motor packages for it span 0.85 to 7.5 kW.

Both drives select EtherCAT, PROFINET IO or POWERLINK on two ports by switch, with EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP and socket communication on a third port. That makes them easy to drop into machines built around different PLC platforms without changing hardware.

Servo motors

The eSM servo motors are ABB’s economy range: 40, 60, 80, 130 and 180 mm flanges, 100 W to 7.5 kW and 0.32 to 48 Nm continuous torque, with single- or multi-turn absolute encoders and IP67 protection apart from the shaft opening and connectors. ABB’s catalogue gives peak torque up to 119 Nm for the 400 V models. The DSM servo motors cover 0.16 to 48 Nm continuous stall torque, up to 120 Nm peak and up to 6,000 rpm. The HDS series is a 10-pole brushless design with encapsulated windings, IP65 except the face (fully IP65 with an optional seal), and resolver, incremental or absolute feedback including a single-connector DSL option.

For broader context on motor selection, our servo and stepper motors hub and the guide to servo vs stepper explain the trade-offs.

Technologies and software

Mint is the thread running through ABB’s servo offer. It is a multitasking, high-level motion language, configured through the Mint Workbench commissioning tool, so a drive can run its own motion programme and registration logic as well as follow a network master. Two fast isolated registration inputs and configurable digital and analogue I/O support that. ABB’s lifecycle model classifies older servo products as Active, Classic, Limited or Obsolete, which is worth checking when supporting an older machine.

Industries served

ABB positions the servo range for machine automation in general. The fieldbus flexibility and Mint programmability suit packaging, material handling, printing and converting machines, where a drive may need to follow a PLC over EtherCAT or PROFINET or handle a self-contained axis. Our servo drives hub covers how to size a drive against a motor and duty cycle.

Global and UK presence

ABB operates worldwide from its Zurich headquarters. In the UK it states a headquarters in Warrington, Cheshire, around 1,750 employees and 22 locations. UK engineers can reach ABB through its UK and Ireland contact centre or through ABB channel partners, which ABB’s servo pages list via a partner search.

Sourcing ABB servo parts through Specify Motion

Specify Motion is independent of ABB and is not affiliated with it. We can help you source ABB servo drives and motors for an existing machine, or propose equivalent parts from our supply network on published figures where a second source makes sense. The find a replacement form is the quickest way to send us a part number or nameplate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ABB servo products website?

ABB's servo pages sit within the Motion area of abb.com, under low-voltage AC drives and servo products. They carry product pages for the MicroFlex e190 and MotiFlex e180 servo drives and the eSM servo motors, plus the combined drive and motor catalogue, the Mint Workbench software and the lifecycle information for older servo products.

What is ABB's phone number and email?

The group provider information page gives +41 43 317 7111 and contact.center@ch.abb.com for ABB Asea Brown Boveri Ltd in Zurich. In the UK, ABB runs a contact centre open Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm, which routes enquiries to the right business; ABB does not publish a separate servo-only phone line on its servo pages.

Where is ABB's headquarters?

ABB's group headquarters is at Affolternstrasse 44, 8050 Zurich, in the Oerlikon district between the city centre and Zurich airport. The legal entity named on the provider information page is ABB Asea Brown Boveri Ltd, registered in the Zurich commercial register under CHE-106.239.600.

Who owns ABB's servo business?

The servo drives and motors are products of ABB itself, sold through its Motion business area rather than through a separately owned subsidiary. The legal entity named on ABB's provider information page is ABB Asea Brown Boveri Ltd, registered in Zurich, which also hosts the group headquarters in the Oerlikon district.

Does ABB have a UK office?

Yes. ABB states that its UK headquarters is in Warrington, Cheshire, and that it employs around 1,750 people at 22 locations in the UK. ABB does not publish a street address on that page; its UK location map and contact centre give site-level details, and channel partners also sell servo products.

What servo products does ABB make?

The current servo offering is two drives and several motor ranges. The MicroFlex e190 is a compact 200–240 V drive rated 3 to 9 A, the MotiFlex e180 a 200–480 V drive rated up to 55 A. Both run Mint and support EtherCAT, PROFINET, POWERLINK, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP. Motors include the eSM, DSM and HDS series.
