How the spec builder works

  1. Products: choose everything the machine axis needs, from slip rings and linear actuators to servo motors, gearboxes, encoders, drives and controllers.
  2. Performance: pick the closest range for load, speed, stroke, torque, circuits or resolution for each product.
  3. Environment: select temperature, ingress protection, washdown, hazardous area, vacuum or cleanroom, and the standards the machine must meet.
  4. Volumes and timing: prototype or production quantities and when you need parts, so we can propose standard, modified or custom options.
  5. Your specification: review the summary and our starting recommendation, then send it to an engineer and download it as a PDF.

Why specify the complete axis

Most problems in motion systems come from the interfaces: a motor whose feedback the drive can't read, a gearbox whose input flange doesn't match the motor, or a slip ring without enough contacts for the encoder and fieldbus. Specifying the axis as one system lets our engineers check voltage, feedback, fieldbus, inertia ratio, mounting and torque margins together, and propose parts from across our supply network that are known to work as a set.

Frequently asked questions

What does the spec builder do?

It walks you through the questions an applications engineer would ask: which products you need, the performance each must reach, the operating environment and your volumes and timing. At the end it summarises your specification with a starting recommendation and sends it to our engineers, who check the sizing and reply, normally within one working day.

Do I need exact figures to use it?

No. Pick the closest range for each question and skip anything you are not sure about. Engineers often start with a rough idea of load, speed and envelope. Our engineers will ask follow-up questions where a figure matters, and can help you calculate torque, force or duty cycle from your machine data.

Can I specify several components together?

Yes. Select every product the axis needs, for example a motor, drive, gearbox and encoder, or a slip ring with a rotary union. Specifying them together lets our engineers check that the parts are compatible on voltage, feedback, fieldbus, mounting and torque, rather than matching separate quotes afterwards.

Is there a cost or obligation?

No. The spec builder and the engineering check are free and there is no obligation. You receive a reference number and can download your specification as a PDF to share with colleagues. We use your details only to respond to the enquiry, and you can opt out of marketing.
