Who Moog is
Moog Inc. is an American engineering company that designs and manufactures precision motion control components and systems. Its own description covers aerospace, defence, industrial and medical applications where velocity, force, acceleration and fluid flow must be controlled precisely, and its portfolio spans actuation technology, control electronics and system software. Moog reports its business in four segments: Space and Defense, Military Aircraft, Commercial Aircraft, and Industrial.
For readers of this site, Moog is best known as one of the major manufacturers of slip rings and fibre optic rotary joints, the components that carry power, signals and data across a rotating interface. Moog is a trademark of its owner.
History and ownership
Moog’s history starts in July 1951, when Bill Moog, Art Moog and Lou Geyer pooled US$3,000 and opened Moog Valve in the corner of an aircraft hangar with one product. The company grew from servo valves into a broad motion control business and marks its 75th anniversary in 2026.
Moog Inc. is a New York corporation and is publicly listed, with its class A shares trading on the New York Stock Exchange as MOG.A. Its fiscal 2025 Form 10-K reports net sales of US$3,861 million for the year ended 27 September 2025 and more than 13,500 employees in over 20 countries. The same report notes divestitures at the start of fiscal 2025, mainly in industrial automation, as part of portfolio shaping.
Within Moog’s reporting, slip rings for CT scanners appear under the medical market in the Industrial segment.
Slip rings and rotary products
Moog’s commercial and industrial slip ring range spans compact capsules, Ethernet slip rings carrying Ethernet and HD video, high-speed capsules with fibre brush contacts rated up to 10,000 rpm, through-bore designs and large-diameter rings, with legacy products marked as end of life. Our records include over 90 Moog series. Representative ones are:
- Capsules: AC6355 one-inch capsule with up to 56 circuits, and miniature gold capsules for gimbals and airborne cameras.
- Through-bore industrial rings: AC4598, AC6200, AC6098 and the compact SRA-73683.
- Modular and split designs: Endura-Trac Standard W and split slip rings that fit round an existing shaft.
- Contactless data: ROTOCAP capacitive data rings and ROTORAY OE1 optoelectronic data transmitters.
- Gold contact rings with media options: Rotoflux ESR 70.
- Large and application-specific rings: large-diameter slip rings, medical CT slip rings, wind power, packaging and vehicular turret slip rings.
- Marine and optical: Model 129 high-voltage winch slip ring and the FO197 fibre optic rotary joint.
- Fluids: Model 70 rotary union.
Some older series, such as the P Series and PH Series capsules, are listed by Moog as legacy or end-of-life products. For how slip rings are specified, see our slip rings hub and the guide on how to specify a slip ring.
What Moog is known for technically
Moog uses fibre brush contacts in its high-speed capsules and through-bore slip rings. In a fibre brush, bundles of fine metal fibres replace a single wire or block brush. Fibre brushes share the current across many contact points, which tends to lower wear and electrical noise and suits higher speeds; Moog’s high-speed capsules rely on it. The company also offers non-contacting data transfer, capacitive (ROTOCAP) and optoelectronic (ROTORAY), for industrial Ethernet where a sliding contact would limit bandwidth or life.
Its application ranges show the other strength, and they are worth reading before asking for a custom design: integrating power, data, fibre optics and fluid passages into one rotary assembly for a specific machine, such as a CT gantry, a wind turbine pitch system or a vehicle turret.
Industries served
Moog’s annual report lists markets across space and defence, military and commercial aircraft, industrial automation and medical equipment. For slip rings specifically, its pages cite camera systems, robotics, packaging machines, medical equipment and general automation, alongside marine, wind and defence applications.
Global and UK presence
Moog operates facilities around the world and lists the UK as a principal manufacturing location. Its facilities directory shows UK sites including Moog Ltd at Ashchurch Parkway, Tewkesbury, as well as Luton and Wolverhampton. Product-level enquiries, including slip rings, go through the contact form on each product page.
